Owner description: Arthur's Seat is one of four hill forts, dating from around 2,000 years ago. Situated within Holyrood Park, as well as it's rich cultural heritage, the park offers walks, solace, wildlife, volcanic geology and unparalleled vistas of the city from its many vantage points. The park has several Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) designations due to its exceptional range of grassland habitats and its internationally important volcanic geology. “far better than a bus ride - all the sights in one go!”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

Arthur was a sensible guy in putting his seat here :-) It's just a wee hike to the top, maybe a bit steep in places for some but well worth the effort. Take a small pair of binoculars and a flask of something hot for it is always windy in Edinburgh to some extent, and a wooly hat too. The reward is a panoramic view of a beautiful city. Even is you do not make it to the top then you can look down at the fine buildings of Holyrood Place and the modern concrete structure that is the seat of devolved Scottish Government.

It is bracing, but you'll complete the descent with a big smile on your face.

“Great Place to go for a Breath-taking view of Edinburgh - and IT'S FREE !”
Reviewed 24 February 2012

If you are the active "hill-walking" type, it will be certainly worth your while to go up Arhur's Seat. This is actually an extinct volcano which is "plonked" on one side of downtown Edinburgh . From Hollyrood Park, there are pathways that will take you up to the top of the hill and at the very top, the "Arthur's Seat", on a nice day, you will get to enjoy a breathtaking view of the City of Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and the countryside beyond. What's more IT'S ALL FREE! How can you beat that???!!! (NOTE: If you have problems walking, I am afraid I would not advice you going there , especially some of the paths are rather steep. You can, however, take a drive around Arthur's Seat and it is still very enjoyable).

“Adventurous climb”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

It provided a breathtaking view of the city but it was wet and windy, and the way up was extremely steep. We drove up Arthur's Seat and had to climb the last bit to the highest point - however the steps were very high (not built for short people like me) which did not lead all the way to the top. I had to be physically pulled up a particularly steep area on the climb up, and got mud all over my gloves and jeans. Going down was a little easier, but dangerous if you were not careful, especially as by the time we went down it was dark already. Nonetheless, it gave us a sense of adventure and the view was very pretty.

Getting this birds-eye view is practically the only way to make an already beautiful town even more gorgeous. The quite-ness, the openness, the green-ness (I'm talking color), and sheer size of it all right there in the midst of one of Europe's greatest cities makes it my top attraction in Edinburgh. Wouldn't miss it for anything. Be sure to pack a coat in chilly weather (gets very windy up there) and have a pint in Scotland's oldest pub--the Sheep Heid Inn--just down the back side of the Seat in Duddingston.
