My wife and I had used the hotel a year ago and were very impressed by the exceptional service, the comfort of the room and the hotel in general and the quality of the breakfasts. So I booked 5 rooms for my family for the weekend to attend my daughter's wedding. When the manager found out that it was a wedding party, nothing was too much trouble. She made sure that my daughter was allocated the biggest room to accommodate the bride and bridesmaids dresses and had appropriate furniture for the hairdresser and make-up artist. They also did all that they could to help the photographer. Incidentally the hotel provides a number of good photo opportunities. The hotel manager also provided complementary champagne (not supermarket fizz), chocolates and a card for my daughter. The hotel undoubtedly made a major contribution to a wonderful weekend. Based on two visits it is clear that quality of service is absolutely their top priority.

We chose Mathew's restaurant at the hotel for a large family meal the evening before the wedding. We have visited Edinburgh many times and eaten at some of the best restaurants in town. None were better than Mathew's.

The hotel is ideally located for visitors to Edinburgh that arrive by car. We left the cars in the hotel's good size car park during the visit. There are plenty of buses that pass the hotel going to the city centre. Alternatively, it is a 20-25 minute walk to the Old Town, Royal Mile etc.

Received a warm welcome on arrival, and was given a good introduction to the hotel, and shown to room. Room was clean and in good order. The hotel is a bit out of the centre of Edinburgh, but there's a good bus service and taxis to/from the centre aren't expensive.

Breakfast was good, with very attentive staff.

On arrival at the hotel we were greeted buy Sean, who was pleasant and helpful, showing us around, handing us a card with bus times on, explained how the bus was the best option for travelling into town, and explaining the honesty bar system. Overall first impressions were good, the entrance hall was lovely and the lounge area looks cosy, this is where the honesty bar is located. Basically you fill in a sheet to say what you have had and it gets added to your bill, a good system.
On first sight our room looked lovely, it was only when we sat in it we realised it did not smell very nice! It appeared to be damp we could smell and the decorative cushions on the bed also did not smell pleasant. The bed appeared to be really large until we saw it was actuually two beds pushed together.
The en suite bathroom needs upgrading some of the fittings had been replaced leaving marks on the tiles, the tiled floor was slippy continuously, as it never dried due to the bathroom being so cold. The towels were thin and tired looking and the bath tap was crooked. The shower curtain was dirty along the bottom.
The compilmentary sherry and shortbread was a nice touch .
Breakfast was ok, plenty of it, we never ate in Mathews restaurant in the evening. Would recommend Wedgewood in town to eat in.
Easy to park, large car park at rear.
Basically did not spoil our visit to Edinburgh but did nothing to enhance it either, would not recommend this hotel to friends/ family simply because of the room we had maybe rooms on higher floors are better.

We had a very pleasant stay. Room was large and clean - complimentary sherry was a nice touch. Bed was large and very comfortable. Jacuzzi bath was nice although somewhat noisy.
Staff very welcoming and extremely helpful.
The hotel is away from the noisy centre but only about 5-10 minutes on the bus which passes right outside the hotel.
Breakfast ok, freshly cooked to order but didn't take very long.
Quite pricey for a hotel of it's size and facilities but considering the hotel prices during the festival are high it was a good find.

We undertook a driving holiday, mainly of Scotland, from Heathrow airport, where we landed and hired a car, up as far north as the Orkney Islands and back again. We stayed primarily at bed & breakfasts found over the internet, checked out via Tripadvisor where possible.

Although not a B&B as such, we stayed in a separate building (the Lodge) with 3 units, away from the hotel. The room was great – big, with a large bathroom (with shower/bath) and separate storeroom (for suitcases). A small decanter of sherry, shortbread biscuits, and bottled water was replenished each day (as is tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc – fresh milk is available from reception). Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms.

All at reception were very helpful, with tour suggestions and even booking Edinburgh Castle on line to save us queuing for tickets when we got there (very sensible).

There’s a full bar next to the hotel lobby with an honour system for payment for drinks. Breakfast was great, and the breakfast room doubles for Matthew’s Restaurant in the evening (which was also great – excellent food with a reasonable pricing system).

The Kildonan is a little out of town, but it has on-site parking. What was terrific is that there are numerous buses into the city, with a bus stop directly across the road from the hotel. Grab the hotel’s business card – it has the bus numbers you need to get back safely (a brilliant idea). A read-out at the bus stop tells you how many minutes away the next bus is. Look out for the school immediately before, and the three flagpoles right outside, the Kildonan and you’re home. It was really easy to use the public transport from the hotel, and took 10 -15 minutes travel time. Although it’s on the main road, as we were in the Lodge at the back of the hotel, we weren’t disturbed by road noise.

We’d use this accommodation again in Edinburgh.
