What to say about amazing Scotland. Amazing people, almost like family. Heart warming and smiles all over for tourists like us. I have a lot to say.
Edinburgh is a university town...beware that its party central mostly well into the nite. Probably going 2 weeks into the autumn session was a not a good idea....but we didn't regret it one minute . As a matter of fact it added to the flavor of what we now know is Edinburgh. A city immersed in its history and its people proud of its heritage which we immediately felt and loved.
We picked this hotel because of its reasonable price and its emplacement, almost dead center on the Royal Mile which is the heart of Edinburgh. The hotel is maybe a 45 second walk to the center of the Royal Mile. Once there its a 5 minute walk to the castle (go left up hill not so bad) and 15 mins walk to Holyrood royal home ( downhill) walk to the right on Royal Mile assuming that you don't stop anywhere along the way...(not).
Before I talk about the hotel..I need to talk about transportation from the airport which is rather special. You have 2 options...taxi or bus unless you have a good friend. The bus (shuttle) will only take you to Waverly bridge (last stop Royal Mile destination). You are stuck there to take you to any hotel up close to the Royal Mile (serious up hill and not for the faint of heart). The bus price is right..around 7 Scot pounds but you have a serious climb to go from Waverly bridge since the Royal Mile is up on a hill. There are taxis (a one minute walk) on Market Street next to Waverly which took to our hotel which we ended up taking (6 Scot lbs to hotel hmmm)
The other option is to take a taxi to and from your hotel (Royal Mile area)...that will cost around 25 Scot lbs one way (worth it if you can afford it.so much less hassle).
The hotel is amazingly placed hands down. The price is reasonable when you look at the other hotels around the same area, mostly located directed on he Royal Mile.
This rooms are very clean, functional and good for tourists, university students and people who wish to do a pit stop for a few days and move on to their next destination.
We had a double bed room facing the front of the hotel.
The washroom, was a little disappointingly small but functional. It had a shower but no bath. There was not much counter room so tricky for normal bathroom activities. Again, it depends what you need. The water was very hot on demand so not a problem. We survived very OK.
There was no safe or mini bar.
The beds were exceptionally comfortable. Unfortunately the sheets (duvet cover) were not changed every day. Not sure why.
Customer Service and the front desk were amazing. I have traveled quite a bit and I will give them full marks.. The amazing thing is that these guys are interesting. They love their jobs and are super helpful...its obvious. Also...never saw a hotel like this where customer service wear customer service T-shirts. I would like to thank everyone at the front desk and otherwise for their amazing support.
Note! The front desk will help you book any excursion you may want (seen on Internet). They are the same excursions you will see on internet
Breakfast is not included in the price unless you have a separate deal. The breakfast is "ok". it a sort of European continental breakfast. If I had any criticism it would be that its the same breakfast everyday. However ok.
There is a "grocery store" and a few shops around (5 minutes )to get the essentials. Water, spirits and "munchies". The grocery store has pretty well what you want. You will not have any trouble finding them around the corner
Ok..now... We had a really good room at the front of the hotel...however it was facing a nite club and a few restos. the problem is that the nite club closes at 4am and the restos at 5am. Then the party moves to the outside. So...even with the windows closed, you can't block out the noise. Everything was ok..and had I been a university student i would have joined, because seriously? it sounded sound llke a lot of fun. So each to your own...the hotel offers ear plugs...
All in all this hotel was perfect for people who are visiting and don't spend too much time their days in their room. I would not recommend for families with children mainly because of the noise at nite and the smaller washrooms.
