Came here on a few occasions and to be honest the food is quite good, there's a decent selection to choose from in their buffet and the prices are reasonable. The hygiene is lacking somewhat (you notice it from food handling and dirty tables) and the service can be stoic.

I'd have given this place a healthy 4 stars but my last trip here qualifies it for 3 stars, as I witnessed a fight between an employee and a customer, I'm quite sure it wasn't part of their entertainment show as it was headlocks galore, crashing into the equipment and plates and crockery being smashed and thrown!

Most of the customers seemed to carry on as though it was business as usual, it thoroughly spoiled our 'chef's special' which was a shame as the food is good here.

Overall an ok selection of food.

On the outside you can see a dingy, slightly garish corner cafe. The minute you walk in you wonder where on earth you are. The atmosphere is loud, vibrant and slightly intimidating. About 50 Somali men are having heated discussions about goodness knows what. But don't be put off. The cafeteria style is informal, go up to the counter, holler to be served and a friendly smiling face will tell you what's on offer on the day. Grilled fish, grilled chicken, succulent lamb shanks and more. Served with mounds of rice or their excellent pancake style breads you will not be disappointed. The coffee is exquisite. Probably the cheapest and tastiest espresso in Birmingham. Never seen a woman customer there. The service is pretty good once they've sussed you are there, someone will check regularly you are ok. The staff seem proud to explain their cuisine and are keen to gauge your enjoyment. Incredibly cheap, never been able to eat all they've served up and they will happily box it for you to take home. Five star!

I had never previously had the pleasure of Somalian food, but would definitely visit again to taste more.

Food is served canteen-style, with giant and filling portions. Much of the menu seems to rely on meats that have been cooked until very tender. The staff were happy to explain what all the meals were and offer suggestions. The prices were very reasonable.

The restaurant is very popular and so could appear a bit dirty to some visitors because the furniture is well-worn.

I appreciated the curtains that can be drawn across the booths to provide privacy to those who want it.

I eat at Salama Somali almost every week as I work near the restaurant. If your after hygienic, wholesome and nutritious food (unlike the rest of the overpriced junk in Small Heath), then I strongly recommend Salama Somali. The restaurant serves a selection of traditional Somali dishes cooked freshly everyday. I particularly enjoy the rice and chicken or the lamb shank with vegetables....if you do go there make sure to try their chilli sauce its SERIOUSLY hot but really really tasty. The service is very good and the staff are friendly and always happy to see you. The portions are extremely generous (dont be suprised if you can`t finish the food) and decently price.
