Can't rate this place highly enough. Everything was superb. The location, the accommodation, the bedrooms, everything was superb. We all loved it. The adults raved about it and so did the children. We all came from far and wide to celebrate my birthday and we couldn't have chosen better. It was beautifully presented and equipped. Bridget was very charming and helpful. It exceeded my very high expectations. A superb venue for a big party.

“Fabulous place, a perfect place for a get together!”
Reviewed 21 May 2014 for a stay in March 2014

This barn is simply stunning. The quality of the finish, the standard of the accommodation, the thought put into every aspect is superb. We had a group of 24 family and friends, youngest was 7 and the oldest was 91.

There was ample space for us all to relax and enjoy, areas where the younger generation could 'hang out' without impinging on the older set. Room to eat and drink in comfort and just be.

We couldn't have found a better place and I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

“How the posh people live!”

We hired Cats Abbey for a wedding party weekend. It was very good, but still relatively expensive even with 24 people sharing!

Cats Abbey is a converted barn, with various buildings attached.

The bedrooms are divided between two wings. The main hall has a couple of bedrooms at ground level but most open from the gallery that runs around and above the living and dining area. The upstairs rooms have fine views. The quieter wing has all rooms at ground level with views over the gardens. Between the two wings of bedrooms is a formal dining space in the conservatory and separate utility area.

With such a large group we had one couple who needed the disable access bedroom. They could get around most of the property fine, but the upstairs bedrooms were out of reach.

The showers in the bedrooms were OK, nicely finished and powerful enough, but just off the shelf domestic systems with high end features. Two shower riser rails were broken when we arrived, and held together with tape. Functionally this had no impact; aesthetically these temporary repairs were noticeable when standing in the shower area. Hot water appeared limitless, and the towels and toiletries were OK. Beds were comfy with good quality cotton bed linen, duvets and pillows. We had some of the single beds zipped together to make extra doubles, and an additional sofa bed on the landing over the main hall. There was more than enough bedding. Carpet in the bedrooms was jute, attractive but hard on soft feet.

The main hall is a large open space with high galleried ceiling, a flag stone floor, with underfloor heating, a comfy sitting area with plenty of seats for the full party, and a huge dining table where we sat 20 people for a meal the day before the wedding.

The Wi-Fi and Hi-Fi worked well, but the TV was not at all intuitive to use, with confusing instructions. Luckily, the little kids were happy enough with a DVD instead of breakfast time cartoons, and that encourage our party to talk not gawp. There is a good selection of books and games.

At the end of the dining area is a large kitchen with a prep table and two cookers - one AGA and one standard cooker - and all the crockery, utensils and equipment you could need. Opening off of the kitchen area is a utility room with a standard sized domestic dishwasher which is far too small when the place is full.

To the rear of the main barn is an enclosed garden, one patio area opens off of the main living area, the other side off of the conservatory with full length opening doors. This is a very pleasant area where we held a BBQ lunch for 32 people.

There are plenty of places to sit and chat, in separate groups or all together.

There are some good walks from the property, along quiet Cotswolds lanes, and through fields; but we ended up back on the A40 one evening, which is not a good road to walk along.

There was a mix up over time to arrive at the property, we thought we had confirmed early arrival, about mid-day, but the manager thought we had not. Either way she would not let us in, allegedly because the premises were still being cleaned - even though nobody else was there.

The website at http://www.catsabbey.com is a fair representation of the property.

The ceremony was in the Bodleian Library, and the reception at Great Barrington village hall! With a double decker bus to and from Oxford this made for a great weekend!

“Absolutely amazing place, best weekend ever!”

We booked the lovely Cats Abbey for our wedding weekend in July last year and it really wouldn't have been the same without it! The owner was extremely friendly and hospitable, the rooms beautifully decorated and the interior that greets you as you step inside is truly stunning. The views around the property were wonderful, a true country getaway.

We hope to return one day, absolutely lovely!
