Having been before, I was impressed that the museum continues to improve the various ways information is presented and the high quality of the audio visual entertainment. My three children loved it and would be happy to go back again tomorrow! The Edge of Empire 3D film is worth the ticket price alone, especially if you buy a joint ticket with the sister site at Vindolanda. It would be well worth visiting the museum before going to Vindolanda as all the information at the museum would really bring the enormous site of Roman remains alive. The cafe is also very good with friendly staff, and very good hot chocolate and a good pot of tea. I think more could be made of the fort outside but that is just a minor quibble. We love going.

A very good informative and well presented snap shot of the Roman occupation of Britannia. Plenty of archaeology to view of the day to day workings to defend the barrier that is Hadrian's wall. For anyone studying the Romans you need to put this on your itinerary. Vindolanda is still very much still work in progress as to on going digs. Seeing it in person will give you a greater appreciation of the bleak out post of the Edge of the Empire.

Great museum demonstrating what it would be like to be a Roman soldier. Interesting variety of displays and videos that kept all ages attentive. Nice picnic area in front of museum and easy access to a beautiful section of the Wall with stunning views towards Scotland

The museum itself is small but superbly designed, displaying a range of fascinating artefacts whilst also offering a vivid insight into life for Romans and Ancient Britons alike. The interactive elements delighted our children, and slightly gruesome mysteries were thought-provoking for our teenagers.
There is a nice gift shop and chance for a cup of tea and a cake.
We had tickets as part of our Vindolanda visit (although it might have been better to come here first to give the context to the Vindolanda site) but had not yet encountered the wall itself. However a two minute walk out of the museum brought us to a quarry car park from where we could see the wall snaking dramatically above us on a steep crag. The walk up to the wall was steep but not unmanageable and took about 20 minutes. The reward was a stunning view of the landscape around us, and a sense of the technological miracle that the construction of this wall in such a tortuous and inhospitable location, (let alone guarding it!) was.
We would thoroughly recommend the museum and the wall, and we will certainly return here in the future.
