Spent the Easter holiday weekend there and had an enjoyable experience. It is an older property and certainly agree with others that the technology could use some updating (televisions, no wireless internet in the rooms). While the setting is very nice across from the racecourse it is a bit of long walk to go into town - 25 mins to entrance/city walls and another 10 mins to Shambles/Minster area. On the other hand, if you have a car, it is easy to get to and you don't need to worry about traffic/roads in York. Hotel was full over the holiday weekend and parking lot (free parking) was extremely full and we always felt luck to get one of the last two or three spots very far from the entrance.

Staff were great - very helpful with recommendations, directions etc. Breakfast was very good with a large selection and once again staff in the restaurant were very helpful with any special requests. Marriott rewards members should note there is no lounge at this property. In lieu we were offered breakfast and a voucher for one drink per person at the bar (not one drink each day - one drink for the whole of the stay). We used our drink vouchers and were charged anyway on our bill but they took it off at check-out.

While we didn't use it, the leisure centre looked very nice - gym and pool - and was usually crowded.

Overall - it worked well for us spending a couple days in York and as a base to explore the area by car (went to the North York Moors National Park as well as Whitby). With Marriott you usually know what to expect - this one meets the standards but as noted could do with some investment in technology and a lounge.

Room Tip: We had a room at the far end of the property overlooking the racecource which was both scenic and qu...

We have just returned from a 3 day break with friends. We stayed at this hotel on many occasions and have always enjoyed our stay.
Unfortuatley this is now not the case. Whilst the hotel entrance lobby, reception, bar and restaurant are all lovely and well maintained, once you get to the upper floor this hotel is now very tied and very very worn .
The hotel room are very clean but furniture and decor are now very worn, and we feel that
whilst this is a Marriott hotel the tariffs need to be changed as the decor is so worn.
You can see many not very good repairs ie painting in places, repairs to walls and ceilings.
Also the staff has been cut back and we had to wait 30 minute for some ice and then we had to ask again for it.
The breakfast as ever was wonderful and fresh but every morning we had to wait for a table to be cleared to acommadate us. Also we had to keep asking for the breakfast buffet to be filled up as some of the things had run out ie bread, jucies eggs.
It is such shame as this is a lovely hotel is idea for exploring York

Got a great deal at the Marriott last weekend. Really enjoyed my stay with my partner. The staff were really helpful and welcoming. Great time relaxing in the spa, although I agree with others that have commented on the size of the changing room. Great breakfast which set us up for a great day exploring the delights of York. Thanks to all the staff that made my stay special.
