Review of St. Mary le Strand

It is worth visiting central London churches, not only to see the often splendid interiors but also to meet one or two of the group of volunteers who ensure that central London churches are kept open most of the time. I happened to visit St Mary in the Strand when a volunteer was dusting the pews. The interior is light because the walls are white and the windows don’t contain stained glass. Crazy location, now on a traffic island, one of the two Island Churches.

This is a church of England church at the eastern end of the Strand and it stands conspicuously on a traffic island. It is the official church of the Women's Royal Naval Service and has a book of remembrance for members who died in service. The architecture is influenced by Italian church architecture with Baroque ornamentation and a storeyed steeple. The interior has ornate and detailed carvings on the white and gold plastered ceiling. A definite must visit if in the area.

The facade of this tiny church situated in the middle of the Strand thorough fare in London is always intriquing. It is a very unique barogue style church. It beckons you as you approach it along the Strand. It is a hit or miss trying o view the interior of the church. Cannot resist crossing the street to view it up close.

The second island church on the Strand (St. Clement Danes is the other, just to the Northeast), St. Mary-le-Strand has always captivated my daughter. We visited when she was five and seeing the little church in the center of the road is one of her strongest London memories. When one of the docents told her that it was nicknamed "St. Mary-in-the-Way" she took it to heart as this little church is literally wedged into the street with traffic buzzing by both sides. Just making it out to the island is a life changing event.

The church has a beautiful and ornate Baroque exterior, and a brilliant white interior with an wonderfully ornate ceiling.

It is definitely worth stopping to see if you are in the neighborhood.

Entrance is free - but hours are quite limited.
There are no public toilets.

The façade against the azure sky was magnificent. Stepping beyond this highly ornate exterior leads to a lovely interior.

The richly decorative ceiling is glorious, with outstanding detail. Numerous stained glass windows enhanced the ambient light. In particular the trio of blue ones enveloping the altar provided a cool impression to the space.
