“gastro pub getting there”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2011

Went to wedding party function upstairs; access was awful, steep stairs and less salubrious ground floor pub area and car park and first floor landing... but I'm sure they're working on it and the food was exceptionally excellent; interesting dishes, well-sourced ingredients.. and I notice they do special fixed-price and early-bird discount meals; open at 12noon and dinner from 6pm on. Recommended.

“Someone has worked very hard to get it this wrong”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2011

I have reviewed this Public House on BITE so won't repeat it all here save to say that my experience is similar to the reviewer below. In addition to the price for the steak there is a service charge of 12%. The produce and cooking skills were both extremely poor and the price far too high. This was the worst steak I have had in a long time and believe the reason it was so badly cooked, amongst other things, is because it had at sometime been frozen. Of the four of us that ate not one meal was satisfactory. The total cost for the evening? I nearly remortgaged the house! Nothing that evening resembled their web site in any shape or form. I now find that many local people who have eaten here have shared similar experiences. What a great pity as so much was expected. The garden is still a lovely place for a pint in the summer although the price is off putting, the staff not very good and the restaurant quite frankly, out of bounds.

“Sadly over priced”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2011

Went for an early dinner with young daughter. Didn't get off to a good start with the surly bar staff and lack of menus, which were apparently still being printed although they then ended up giving us the lunch menus 30 mins later.
We both had the smoked salmon to start with which was OK, although the horseradish in the accompanying sauce was barely noticeable. The mains were a real disaster. Rump steak was overcooked, had way too much fat on it and was worth no where near £18. Likewise the haddock was heavily overcooked leaving the batter inedible. The fish in the kids meal tasted much better.
On the plus side the pub and restaurant have both been done up really nicely, the garden looks welcoming and the staff in the restaurant were really friendly. Its a real shame as there is genuine under supply of decent gastro pubs in this part of north london and we've enjoyed eating at the Prince Albert in Camden, thus if they could get the food and the pricing right they could do well. Tellingly there was only one other table occupied in the restaurant when we left at 7.30pm on Sat night.
