“If it was not for the excellent customer service...”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

I stayed in the hotel for a business trip, and probably should not have illusions on what you are given for corporate prices.

The first room I was given
- smelt of cigarette
- trash bins were not emptied
- internet was not working
- had absolutely no window (!) - just a tiny opening to the ventillation system

So I complained and was planning to be very angry, however, I faced such an attentive and polite service from the front desk that I could possibly not be mad at anyone. They apologised for not being able to provide another room straight away, but would move me the day after (which they did) and from that moment on everything got right. The new room was nice, with an actual window, working internet, etc. A room you should excpect for a corporate price.

Dear Hotel mgmt, if you are reading this, please don't destroy your image by calling 113 a room. It puts you in a very bad light, which was only saved by your staff.

Very much approved of this hotel.

Everything in our (admittedly compact - but perfectly fine for our night's stay) was spotless, the bed was comfy, they had decent sized cups and plenty of tea and coffee available in the room, and the staff were welcoming and efficient.

One criticism would be that the shower was a little ill thought out - to change the temperature you had to lean in through a freezing stream of water, but otherwise was powerful and clean.

Another may be that it is a bit of a roundabout way from a tube - no problem for me as a regular London visitor - though on a main road in the area and maps easy to use, approx 10+ minute walk.

We booked on lastminute.com and so had a very good rate (£85), not sure what the standard charge is, but was very happy.
Would definitely come again.

My family and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Mercure London City Bankside several times -- and always look forward to our next visit.

The rooms are modern and clean. They are not terribly huge and don't have much of a view, but they do have room for either an extra bed for our daughter or a have a sofa that converts to a bed.

Bathrooms are nice with good water pressure. During one of our stays, we did have problems with a bathroom and a plumber had to see to it. As compensation we were treated to dinner at the hotel's restaurant. This was a completely unexpected gesture and was very pleasant indeed.

Breakfast at the Mecure Bankside is without a doubt the best I have had at any hotel in London. Aside from the items from the hot and cold buffets, one can request waffles, eggs Benedict, kippers, and smoked haddock with a poached egg.

Staff are friendly and helpful.

The location is interesting in many ways. It's a 12 minute walk to London Bridge Station, and about 3 minutes to the Tate Modern and Millenium Bridge. The hotel is convenient for walks along the Thames. The only problem can be in getting to the West End. One must take a bus towards Covent Garden and thence change for buses running along the Strand.

The one minus during our last stay was that the room temperature was difficult to adjust.

Room Tip: There is free WiFi in the hotel's lobby

As the title suggests this was a last minute booking to support work. The service was good, rooms good, and I ate there one night and food was very good I must say.
Due to work I was not there much, but when I was, I needed for nothing. Thanks Guys!!

As you can see from the other reviews, this hotel is well situated on the South Bank with most sights and attractions in the vicinity of The Globe/Tate/St Pauls in walkable distance. The check-in was welcoming and efficient. The rooms are small but clean and tidy and perfect for an overnight stay. I wouldn't stay here with kids unless I was on a budget. TV very small and old. No road noise or noise from other rooms. Find the air conditioner first! I didn't and sweated buckets all night - my fault. The breakfast and dinning are average but fine for the odd day or two. Don't pay full price if you can help it - this hotel is reguarly advertised on last minute type websites for a wothwhile discount. If you are paying full rates consider the nearby NOVOTEL which is a better hotel.

Room Tip: Book last minute
