“Fantastic stay at applegarth”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

Just returned from a fantastic stay at applegarth. We were greeted on arrival by alan and suzanne (the owners) they were very helpful and welcoming and excellent company We stayed in room 7 and it was stunning the bathroom is fabulous with huge whirlpool bath and walk in shower. All the public areas in the hotel are just as stunning. Before you book check out the website and choose which room you want as they are all different. The food was also out of this world. Our stay was delightful and we will definately return and recommend to friends. Keep your eye peeled for the odd celeb!!

After seeing the stunning pictures and good reviews for this hotel we were very happy when a relative booked us in for the weekend, however when we got there and our room was allocated complete dismay, room 15 is the smallest double bedroom I’ve ever been in and I’ve stayed in hundreds of rooms B&B’s to 5* and for a lot less money.
The bed is just a double, the tea tray has to hide in the bottom of the wardrobe as there is nowhere but the floor for it to go, the tiny bathroom exquisitely finished but clearly too small, no bath, the sink is smaller than ones you find on a train and there isn’t even space for two peoples toilet bags, except on the floor and with only one bathrobe (probably to save space) makes you wonder how they can justify calling this a DELUXE room.
It was clearly no place to relax and unwind in comfortable surroundings and although our price did include dinner for £150 it was expensive and the accomodation cramped to say the least.
Unfortunately when I later looked at the website I realised the pictures of the single room and our room 15 are the same, it is a SINGLE room so I suggest you pay the few pounds more to ensure you get a room you can actually swing a cat in, weekend ruined! This room is strictly for SINGLES ONLY, you’ve been warned, size does matter.

Room Tip: Be really careful with room selection some are very small suitable for SINGLES only

we booked the hotel for a special treat..and it was well worth it. Even though there were no pictures on the hotel's website we decided to book Room 2....It is amazing a beautiful room, really spacious and a bathroom and shower to die for.The staff were friendly and the hotel is spotlessly clean, Our room was not quite ready when we arrived, we were offered a complimentary drink while we waited, and 'filled' in on a little bit of history of the house. lovely food and plenty of choice, wish we could have stayed longer in order to ,eat our way through the menu. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Room 2 is gorgeous....huge bed amazing bathroom with a massive Spa bath...take the champers and enjo...

I always seem to read reviews but have never left one until now as felt I had to due to the exceptional stay that my boyfriend and I had here.

We stayed lastnight and from the minute we arrived we felt happy and comfortable. The room(3) was comfortable, beautiful and as described, the food was exceptional (breakfast and dinner)and I loved the cosy bar...I think I could have stayed there happily all evening. However, it was the service that made the stay really exceptional and I would like to give credit to one man who must have to work the longest hours but he doesn't show it. From the minute we walked in, he was a brilliant help (unfortunately I didn't take his name). When we went for dinner, we were shown menus and sat in the bar by the fire and offered a drink. We then were able to order in the bar area and called to the table once our food was ready, which made the whole experience more cosy and pleasurable.

My boyfriend also had a massage at the nearby hotel and said it was one of the best he has had.

The only complaint I had was because everything was so luxurious, I felt I should have upgraded to a luxury room (not that there is anything wrong at all with the deluxe but as everything else was so perfect, I felt I should have had the perfect room.)

Thank you very much! Would 100% recommend!

First impressions - the hotel is a stunning arts and crafts building with a very impressive entrance. Original tiled flooring, oak paneling and beautiful feature stained glass windows have all been lovingly restored. The bar and restaurant area are well maintained and in keeping with the period feel of the property. The decor is tasteful and there are many interesting pieces dotted about. When we stepped inside on arrival my heart soared and I wanted to love the place, but there lies the rub, despite the immaculate surroundings and attention to detail something about our stay just missed the mark for us.

Firstly we made a mistake with our room choice and opted for room 3, without realising that it is the smallest room in the hotel, a little guidance when we booked would have been helpful. The double bed in this room is so close to the bathroom door that it hits the side of the bed when opened and there are no lounge chairs or sofa to sit on, This is not a big deal as the room was comfortable enough, but as the hotel was not full it would have been a nice gesture to be upgraded to something a bit larger. So the moral of the story is avoid room 3 if you can and pay the extra for one of the larger rooms if your wanting your stay to feel more special. I peeped into a few other rooms whilst they were being cleaned and they were stunning, such a shame ours wasn't. Room facilities were good and the shower excellent. The hospitality tray though was a bit lacking for a hotel of this standard - some quality biscuits would have been nice.

The hotel currently offer dinner as part of the package, which makes the price more affordable and the food is quite good, though not spectacular. The wine list was reasonably extensive for a small establishment with a range of well priced wines. Breakfast choice was excellent with a few different options featured. The service was prompt and polite but a bit lacking in warmth. We stayed on perhaps the coldest weekend of the winter so far and it would have been lovely to have had the place warmed with open fires but they seem to have been replaced with gas effect fires that weren't even switched on, despite it being quite chilly in the bar. The bar itself was very comfortable (apart from temperature) but lacked any atmosphere whatsoever, a fire might have helped and encouraged guests to linger but instead everyone seemed to disappear back to their rooms straight after dinner. In fact the whole hotel had the feel of the Marie Celest as there was never anyone around, perhaps this is what created a slightly strange atmosphere about the place .

I have awarded Applegarth Villa 4 stars as it is certainly better than average, but there are somethings that could have been better and the overall experience should have felt more special. A few tweaks here and there would take this hotel into another league.

Room Tip: Room 3 is a small double and is probably the worst in the hotel, though it has a good view.
