This used to be the station hotel for Keswick before the short-sighted closing of the railway in 1972. The building dates from 1869 and is some way to the north of the town centre. It feels quiet, with peaceful gardens and the former railway walkway hard by. Yet you're a minute's walk from the swimming pool, two minutes' walk frm the town's quirky and fascinating museum and from Fitz Park, less than five minutes from bus stops to take you all over the Lake District and just a little more to the shops.

The hotel itself has partly refurbished its public areas, so there's a mix of old-world cosiness and modern appeal. The rooms are what you'd expect, but confortable and good value. However, in a nominally 3-star hotel the quality of the food is way higher than that. So too are the excellent staff in the restaurant, at reception and on housekeeping duty.

This reallly was a bit of a surprise to discover. The only way to improve it from our point of view would be if trains started running again...

Room tip: Rooms looking over the old station also open out to Latrigg and Skiddaw.

Excellent hard working pleasant and plentiful staff members. Outstanding food and we had a big fine room in the old railway station extension. Sensible bar prices Plenty of room to relax in the evenings.Steeped in history. Check out the old photographs.

We last stayed in the hotel when it was a trust house, 30 plus years ago. Delighted to find it still going strong. Good service, sensible food for a resort hotel and a beautiful room overlooking the garden, complete with rabbits. We were so delighted that we've already booked for next Easter.
