Stonecross Manor Hotel
Ranked #7 of 13 Hotels in Kendal
Reviewed 9 January 2013

I my wife and 2 friends have been staying at Stonecross Manor for about 5 years, we always stay at the New Year for 3 days, this is usually 29/30/31 Dec, Stonecross Manor runs a NewYears Eve gala function this is a two night deal you can (which we do) stop an extra night. The deal is for one of the two nights evening dinner is included then the following evening being the Gala night these days also of course include breakfast, the first day is b&b only you can either stay at the hotel for dinner and pay the extra or as we do take the 20 minute walk into Kendal Town for a curry. The total cost for this combination is £510.00 per room. The price is certainly not on the cheap side but overall we have found it reasonable. We do tend to agree with fellow Trip Advisor contributors in that the hotel is in a time warp starting to look very tired in all departments, the whole hotel could do with redecorating, carpets on the stairs threadbare in places, room furniture outdated. In a way I feel a little bit of a traitor by making some of these comments but enjoying the stay that we do have when there. In it's defence the breakfast is very good, self service with plenty of choices in all departments, if you wish for other than the self service there is a table menu. The traditional evening dinner menu once again is very acceptable a good wine menu or if you wish drinks from the bar. We have found the staff usually very accommodating and attentive, the rooms depending on which you chose (we usually ask for 208 and 209 as they are at the front of the hotel) the rooms have ensuite with bath, a good shower, hairdrier, flat screen TV, iron and board, telephone, and of course Tea & Coffee tray. If you are of a tall disposition these 2 rooms may not suit you as the roof pitch in the room is fairly low and I and my friend often forget and pay the price. We have never yet qualified for the bottle of fizz yet probably part of another type of deal. Finally the hotel does have a small dip pool and Jacuzzi. After all of this my wife reckons we will be returning at the end of this year, time will tell.

Great stay between Xmas & New Year. Booked internet deal including bottle of fizz when we arrived, four poster bed & dinner.
Period building on outskirts of Kendal, decor fine but slightly faded in the corners. Spacious room, very clean, with modern ensuite (small bath, but i'm 6' 4" so most baths are small) and lovely old big bed. View of staff car park, but you can't have everything.
Dinner was traditional, with half a dozen choices for starter & mains, but cooked and presented well, with attentive staff. Full English breakfast superb.
If you're looking for a short break for a reasonable price this hotel definately has it. We will definitely go back

Stayed here on the way up to Scotland!
Good, clean, dog friendly accommodation!
Slightly dated as a hotel, but well worth the money I paid, bed and breakfast!
Breakfast was very good, good choice of options. About a 20 minute walk to Kendal town.
Would recommend, but not for a special occasion.

We stayed here as it was my 40th and we wanted something special. We would however been better off at a b&b as our weekend break was ruined by so much noise; staff that could not smile; dirty carpets, bathrooms and resteraunt and glaring bright lights while eating. If you look at the pictures of this hotel you will be decieved inot thinking that you really would be staying in a manor house, once you arrive though it will becaome clear that the pictures have been stretched and taken from very flattering angles. Take the one above for example -this makes the hotel look as though it's in it's own grounds with amazing trees and lawns - WRONG! Just to the right is the main road; just to the left is the footpath to the car park at the back and the hotel itself has been stretched as it is half the size. Our fourposter room overlooked a yard with an old caravan and abandoned car. We were wondering where the boom boom boom was coming from constantly when we realised that downstairs the speakers are in the ceiling. You may be lucky enough to not get the room that we were in and be above these but for these prices and when you think you are staying in a fourposter room (something special) you don't really want to take the chance. We booked the three course meal deal - good value for money but we waited ages. We had soup forstarters and it had no taste at all - then waited 40 mins for main meal which we must admit was gorgeous but we never recieved the desert after waiting for an hour and then being told that we hadn't ordered one -impossible really when you order the three courses together. This may sound as though we are 'that kind' of grump who always complains but trust me we go away all the time and this is the first place we have complained about. It is awful, trust me. Even one of the towels in the bathroom had holes in it and the carpets are dirty. The wardrobe was missing a handle and the one remaining was falling off. The bed was dreadful and moved so much we thought we were going to fall and we only had to breathe to make it squeek so badly so if you are planning any romance think again!! This is probably a 2* hotel if that and I would not stay here again if I was paid. It is so overpriced with photoshopped pics and cheap furniture that is made to look like reproduction. This is a terrible place and should be avoided at all costs.

Room Tip: We chose the fourposter room which we think there are many. Avoid as they are not real fourposters...

We stayed here in March this year for 2 nights. Hotel from the outside looked pretty impressive. When we approached reception the member of staff seemed very robotic no smiles. The room was a decent size but the bed was very uncomfortable and there was a lot of outside noise while we were trying to sleep, fans going on and off constantly. After a terrible nights sleep we headed down for breakfast the staff there could not be more different than the one we encountered previously very attentive and helpful. There was plenty of choice for breakfast array of hot food, cereals and fruit. Lake Windermere is beautiful and we were lucky enough to visit on a day the sun was out! caught a boat from Windermere to Ambleside where we had lunch and a nice walk around before returning on a boat back to Windermere.
