First impressions are of a gorgeous building and a rather nice interior. But it is just an impression. The staff, I have to say, are wonderful. The facilities are not.

My room, for no good reason, had a huge four poster bed with the most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on. Despite three pillows and the half of the duvet I wasn't using underneath me, it was still rock hard. And I have a lot of personal padding! I saw in every hour from 11 to 4. At 3 someone decided to have a shower next door. The walls are paper thin. At 5 someone left (probably someone else who couldn't sleep) clattering down the corridor.

Dinner in the restaurant was very curate's egg. Nicely done chicken livers - properly pink - but a clearly re-heated main course with congealing gravy and rock hard meat. (Probably setting me up for the bed ahead.) The house wine was surprisingly good, as was the home made ice cream.

Would I stay there again? Not in that room.

Room Tip: Avoid the one with the four poster bed

My mother and I had a bargain 3 night break. All the staff were nice and friendly. The hotel throughout including the pool and jacussi area was clean. The breakfast was superb, especially the mushrooms.
Apart from breakfast we did not eat there. I ate at the nearby Kendal college cafe, the college is renowned for their catering courses, and their restaurant is open to the public on certain days.
There was only one problem, the bedroom was too hot at night, even with the window open (mad in Nov.), and the radiator off it was still too hot for sleeping.

A big grumble is the steep car parking charges all over the lake district, not even a winter reduction. We will not be back. I hope we find this type of hotel in other areas of Britain.

We stayed 2 nights during our 4 week trip of Ireland & UK. We came across Stonecross Manor when we headed to the Lakes District & we were looking for somewhere to stay & thought it looked quite nice from the outside. We got a pretty good rate for B&B - GBP80.00.
Our room was fairly big - had a 4 poster bed plus another single bed - the bed was quite comfortable. To get to the room we had to go through a bit of a maze of corridors & up & down little stairs - bit of a hike with big bags.....
Our room seemed to sit over the kitchen area (we were on the 2nd floor) & there was a huge pipe running on the outside of the wall near the window & it made loud continuous noises - not sure what the pipe was for but it seemed to only make the noises when the kitchen was operating - perhaps it was an exhaust pipe for the kitchen?. It didnt stop us sleeping but we could hear it early in the morning & late at night.
The breakfast was fairly reasonable but I found it a little annoying that you had to ask the wait staff for toast, on the 2nd morning it was very busy it took a very long time to come & by then we had almost finished our breakfast - in most other hotels, you cook your own toast. I did like the fact that they had little boxes of individual cereals rather than a big bowl as I think the individual boxes are more hygenic.
The hotel provides plenty of carparking which was good.
We did use the pool which was nice to have a swim, the spa didnt seem to be working.
It was a good place to base ourselves for exploring the Lakes District.
If we were to go to the area again, I would stay here again if we got a good price.

Greeted on arrival with a cream tea with home made jam. That was just the start. Lovely old fashioned room, very warm and comfortable. The bed would have slept a whole family. Soft towels. Good swim and hot tub before dinner.
Food was excellent, freshly cooked and slightly different to the norm.
All the staff we spoke to were great ambassadors for the hotel.
Them there was breakfast. So much choice, healthy and all the cooked food.
Try it for yourself though. We will return soon.
Thank you.
