This was our second visit to the apartment, the first being some 8 years ago. Very pretty location by the river and very close to the village of Grasmere and all its amenities which gave my husband a complete rest from driving. My husband is the real walker and he found excellent walking in the area so again no need to use the car and he could just go from the cottage with a packed lunch and walk for a few hours.
The owner, Lindsay, is very easy to deal with and very organised. We lost a key during out stay and contacted her and it was no problem. There was a spare.
The buses are excellent and I visited Windermere one day and was entertained by a Chinese speaking bus driver!!! Lots of connections to other places and you can hop off and hop on again when you want. Again, easy and no need to find a car park. Also used the train to Manchester to see an old friend - very easy but you need to book seats in advance as it was busy coming back. Very cheap with a senior railcard and good trains
Very good pubs and restaurants within walking distance - Tweedies good and we had dinner at the Rothay Garden hotel next door - really good but you need to book days in advance. The Red Lion (now The Inn) good for a drink and we had a nice lunch there. Didn’t have dinner there though.
Went to Dove Cottage - good tour with a guide who certainly knew her subject and then Rydal Mount which was a lovely house and super garden - good for rainy days!
The local Co-Op is amazing - has about everything you need and is open long hours even at weekends. Also has a cash dispenser. There is a lovely bakery in the village plus a Farmers’ Markets on Fridays for meat, cheese and bread.
The apartment kitchen is very well equipped -mostly Neff appliances -everything you need on holiday - good crockery, cooking equipment, dishwasher, washing machine and combined dryer etc . It is nice and warm and the heating works quickly should you need it. The bathrooms are excellent - shower is super! Apartment was very warm, good beds (we slept extremely well) and towels. Very lovely garden where we saw the odd red squirrel and had a little shrew running about just outside our bedroom window which was entertaining - we even managed to have one lunch outside on a good day. Cottage has lots of books for if it rains which it did on some days.
Small Drawbacks were :
- we agree with the other review - the noise from next door and are just grateful we didn’t have a noisy family visiting - it was only a couple but we could hear a lot of noise.
- again - we agree with the other review - the WiFi is simply awful -in this day and age it should be far better. We got very fed up with it. Also, the TV was quite difficult but it dawned on us that one of the remotes either didn’t work or needed new batteries.
- we found it quite difficult to read in the lounge just by the light from the lamps (we hate overhead lights) - so perhaps some additional lamps could be added.
Having said the above small criticisms we had a really good week despite some wet weather and we went home rested and relaxed and I’m sure we will visit again in the future. It is certainly the best we have stayed in in this area and not having to drive everywhere is so nice. Thank you Lindsay!
We stayed two weeks in this very well-appointed and comfortable apartment, in a convenient situation in Grasmere. It has been designed and furnished perfectly for a civilised holiday, and you feel very much at home, with bookshelves and even a sherry decanter setting the tone.
Two issues during the stay affected us. First, the wifi was only available in a small area of the apartment (no connection in bedrooms, nor at the end of the sitting room); but often was not available even then, so you could spend 15-30 mins or longer trying to get a signal. This appeared to be when it was being heavily used in the adjacent house, so a stronger router or separate connection for the apartment appears to be necessary.
The other problem, which is probably at its worst during school holidays, is that the apartment and adjoining house have a connecting door through which voices can be heard from their living area; plus the next-door’s bedrooms are above most of the apartment. Sounds had been low-key during our first week, but in the second a noisier family arrived and because of the rumpus coming from upstairs we had to complain to the owner, with a good response which solved the worst of it but it was still a daily irritant, with children running and jumping above our heads and the second bedroom being woken at 6.30 by young children. So if you want to enjoy the peace and atmosphere at its best, perhaps avoid school holidays (and the wifi may possibly be better then too, without heavy usage by children and teens).
The apartment is a lovely place, with a large well-equipped kitchen, soft bathroom towels, an attractive patio to sit out on – everything you could want and well above average, and we would certainly recommend it.
Peaceful location by the river Rothay. The apartment was as described and could not be faulted for ease of access, cleanliness and comfort . Lindsay ,the owner , was very easy to deal with and we have already booked again for next year .
Checking the availability for the rest of the year should tell you all you need to know !
We recently spent a week at Rothay Lodge Apartment. The apartment is very comfortable and is very well furnished and equipped. The location suited us very well, within easy walking distance of the restaurants, shops and pubs in the village of Grasmere.
My elderly mother was staying with us and she has restricted mobility, and cannot climb stairs. The apartment was perfect for her being all on the ground floor and the en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower was ideal. The one small issue that we had during the week (wi-fi stopped working) was immediately resolved with a phone call to Lindsay, the owner.
Lindsay was extremely responsive and helpful throughout the booking process and during our stay. We definitely hope to stay there again. Thanks Lindsay!
