We booked table at a time when early bird offer available , lovely warm friendly welcome and we enjoyed three courses of homemade delicious food - pate was beautiful and a really generous portion , mains chicken Marsala and Cumberland sausage- not a morsel left on either plate!!!!!! Lots of choice for dessert and we were very full and highly satisfied. Staff attitude has to help make this a 5 star report as they were SO genuine and welcoming thankyou!
Recommended this restaurant to a couple we got chatting to who are staying in grasmere for the week - hope they go to enjoy such lovely service and food.

Classic French cooking executed brilliantly. Also had a really good Cotes du Rhone, and as a wine merchant myself I really appreciated this. Best meal we had in Ambleside.

Having read previous reviews and seen the menu decided to book a table. Mussels to start followed by the biggest steak frites I have had. Eyes where certainly bigger than my belly but highly recomended

Went here early evening with friends and had a lovely meal. My friends had the Cumberland sausage and said it was very good and I can recommend the smoked haddock risotto. There wasn't much of an atmosphere but we did eat there very early and the food was good.

My partner, Jackie, and I spent a week in Ambleside at the end of June 2017. We ate out every evening and visited six of the top 10 restaurants in the town.
Matthews was a clear winner (with Dodds coming second). The lamb shoulder was the best I've ever had, the wine was excellent and the service/ambiance was perfect. I shall return.
