The House of Agnes is in a great location for visiting Canterbury. It is quite literally a minutes walk to Canterbury West train station, and a minutes walk from Canterbury city centre. The pricing (for Canterbury) is not extortionate, and the outside rooms are spacious and good. The staff are also nice and there is a bar with a ‘trust’ policy which is nice to see. However, the breakfast is only average really, and there are places to stay that offer a better experience.

Just returned from a weekend break at the House Of Agnes. What a lovely place it is. There were six of us staying in the stable rooms. The rooms are tastefully decorated and very comfortable with tea/coffee making facilities, tv/DVDs player and hairdryer. The shower was quite powerful and the water hot. The staff are very polite and helpful. Breakfast was very tasty - if there was one criticism it would be that there was no black pudding or fried bread, I don't eat cooked breakfasts unless away on weekend breaks such as this and always look forward to the breakfast. The honesty bar is a brilliant idea and the prices were very reasonable. There are DVDs to borrow and board games, chess and draughts to play, should you feel inclined. I am definitely going to return

Room tip: The stable rooms are lovely. There is train noise but is lasts literally seconds.

The property is well situated for an easy walk into the centre and offers very good parking facilities as well as a lovely garden to use. On arrival we were greeted by a lovely lady called Anna who showed us to the Marakesh room which we had booked for two nights. The room was good but it is worth bearing in mind the property is very old; we felt it would have benefitted from a lick of paint here and there, the brown wooden shelves and the bathroom door were scuffed and grubby and the door creaked terribly, although the bathroom itself was very clean. There were two things that stopped me giving a higher mark; the breakfast was not very good at all, the bacon and the sausage looked and tasted like they'd been cooked some time previously and reheated even though we were down early. The other point was that on returning in the evening I wanted some milk - there was no-one on reception however there was in full view printouts of other guests' details including their full names, addresses and telephone numbers - not good. We had to knock on the kitchen door after waiting for some time to get someone's attention.

Situated just outside the West Gate you are handy for everything, so park the car up and walk into town. We stayed in one of the themed rooms, in the main house - Mumbai - which was tastefully decorated, we would have gone for one of the larger rooms but they were fully booked for part of our visit.

Despite being in a room overlooking the main road there was very little traffic noise as the windows have secondary glazing.

The themed rooms in the main house require access up stairs - ours was on the third floor, so if you are not good with stairs go for the stable rooms instead.

Wonderful old building with beautiful gardens in a private courtyard at the back.

Lovely breakfasts including a special of the day cooked to order each day. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

One downside is the entrance to the car park, it's very narrow and although the dimensions are on the website, there are two triangular blocks sticking out from the wall at the bottom and you need to be prepared if you drive a large car.

We found that the only way we could access was to come down the road and turn right across the traffic, it was impossible if coming from the left. The traffic is reasonably calm around the area and there was no tooting or revving whilst we were manouvering into position (wouldn't happen around here where we live!) I also got out and stood in front of the car whilst it was driven through.

The Car park is a good size, but not that wide so with a long car you will need to park at the top end. We found this area was mainly staff and they were happy to swap places to accomodate us.

With Whistable and Herne Bay around 15 mins drive away and The Kent and East Sussex Railway around 45 mins away there is plenty to keep you occupied for a 4 night stay.

Would we stay here again.....most definitely!

Room tip: Themed rooms in the main house require access via stairs -Stable Rooms - ground level a short walk away from the main house for breakfast

We stayed at House of Agnes in March and it was simply fantastic. We were in the Stable House rooms and found them spacious, quiet, well appointed and relaxing. The historic aspect of House of Agnes was certainly worthwhile, full of charm and felt extremely comfortable. From the library to the well stocked self-service bar to the exceptional breakfast we were well taken care of. The service was exceptional and we highly recommend this little gem in quick walking distance to the wonderful parks and the city center.

Room tip: The stable house rooms were quite nice.
