A cold day in Hereford and we stopped in for lunch. I can't think of anything we didn't think was good. The welcome at the door was much appreciated, the staff members in the dining room were friendly, well-trained and efficient, not to mention helpful, knowledgable and obliging. The decor is traditional but in a fresh and contemporary style, and everywhere looks smart, clean and well-maintained. White table cloths and napkins, simple good-quality glasses and unfussy cutlery all pleased us. The Winter Warmer menu (£20 for 2 courses, a bit more for 3) looked good but not quite as enticing as the main menu. We each had two starters, as we were keen to try as wide a range of items as possible. A terrific faggot, more a pulled-meat meatball in a caul was a star. Lovely textures and flavours and, surprisingly perhaps for all the starters, the vegetable component wasn't underplayed. We tried an Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon which was rich, fruity with undertones of liquorice and leather and really hit the spot. Highly, highly recommended.More
