We stayed here for 2 nights and were extremely disappointed. Decor was tired and dated. Bed was lumpy and uncomfortable and the shower was the worst shower we have ever had the pleasure of using. Noway is this place value for money or deserving of its AA 4 star rating. Best bit was the breakfast, worst bit was being told "thats the way the shower is in room 7" Vote with your feet and stay elsewhere.

We thought this place was a shocker. We were running out of options when we booked this place and were sorry we did.
The owner was friendly enough but the whole place was very ordinary. It has the steepest, narrowest and most dangerous stairs I have ever seen and we had to continue up them for two stories - through doors at each level! Quite disgusting. The room was a shocker. Two single beds with outdated decor stuck up in the roof somewhere. The bathroom had to be seen to believed. It was so small to defy belief but had a noisy pumping system to attempt to clear the water from this room. Apparently gravity wasnt enough. The works were of an amateur standard at best.
We skipped breakfast as the whole look and tone of this place suggested we needed to escape quickly and if that standard was similar to the room we could be in trouble.
It depends what you are looking for here - but if you want quality, cleanliness and to escape without injury (on the staircase) do not go near St Margarets.

Privately run hotel with 'traditional' decor and furnishing. Clean and well maintained. Rooms were spacious. Hospitality was pleasant, the inclusive breakfast good and staff exceptionally attentive. Situated close to the front in Southsea but only a short ride to Portsmouth centre and it's attractions.

The family room was comfortable, very clean, and large enough even with toys and luggage strewn about. The owner and his staff were very friendly and helpful.
It's a 5 minute walk to the sea side and about 10 or 15 minutes to some restaurants etc. Plenty to see and do just a short drive away (Portsmouth, ferry to Isle of Wight, etc)
Parking no problem. Breakfast was great.

We stay here on all our visits to Portsmouth and have always been very pleased with the service. Friendly hosts with a lot of local knowledge which they are more than happy to share.
