“Do not stay here if you want a good sleep!”
Reviewed 26 March 2012

We stayed here for one night, actually a year ago almost! It has taken a while for me to sit to write the review - all very negative! Arrived and they had one room left - wouldn't even reduce the price to half even though we arrived at 9.45pm, and had 15 minutes to get to the restuarant, if we wanted to eat there... we didn't. There was a wedding - which we were told about. What we were not told about was that the partying all night would keep us up - terrible value for money. Hard floor boards .. look lovely, sound awful with drunk people running up and down them all night.

We tried to contact the owner / manager since our experience to talk this through, and after several attempts, have proved unsuccesful ... hence now putting this on Trip Advisor.

One saving grace .. breakfast is lovely and the scenic pretty garden in the Spring is also very nice.

If you enjoy your sleep, and want to feel special - do NOT stay here!

Stayed for my birthday. They gave us an upgade on our room, a good start. The room was large and had a wonderful view of the south Downs. You could have a nice relaxed drink at the bar before going into one of the dining rooms. The meal and service were first class. Extensive breakfast. Even better value if they are doing one of their special packages.

Room Tip: Go for a larger room

As soon as we arrived at The Pelham House we were made to feel welcome. We had booked one of their executive rooms and we weren't disappointed, it was a good size with a wow factor bathroom. The mix of traditional and modern decor worked well and the little extra's like the iPod docking station gave it a home from home feel. The wood panelled restaurant created an intimate atmosphere and served good food, we ate there both nights of our two night stay and there was a good variation of cooked dishes for breakfast. All the staff were friendly, helpful and professional but a special mention should be paid to the waitress who served us at breakfast, despite being busy she was happy to impart her knowledge on the history of the hotel and the local area, which being our first trip to Lewes we found very helpful. In fact it was that sort of personal service that gave the whole place such a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, we will definitely be going back.

This elegant hotel is totally in keeping with its historic surroundings and is right in the heart of Lewes. Parking is therefore at a premium. It wasn't clear from the internet booking that it would be necessary to reserve a parking space and we had to feed the meters for adjacent street parking between the hours of 8am-6pm. Cheaper all day parking was available at several car parks about 10 minutes walk from the hotel and the reception staff were very helpful in advising about this. Putting the parking issue to one side, the main hotel has great atmosphere and is full of glorious sculpture and paintings. We booked late and were in the annexe which was very clean and comfortable, if lacking some of the artistic delights of the main building. It was a pleasure to arrive to the sound of classic fm and find a proper radio in the room that actually worked, a spacious modern shower, lots of fluffy towels, a well positioned flat screen TV and heating that kept us as warm as toast on a cold February night. It's just a few steps across the court yard to the main hotel with its attractive bar and restaurant areas .We ate out in Lewes in the evening with friends but the breakfast was superb. Apart from the lovely spiced fruit compote, yoghourts and cereal there is every type of breakfast egg imaginable, as well as a full English breakfast on offer. The eggs Royale and Florentine were a joy as was the freshly brewed coffee, all served by friendly, attentive staff and with soft classical music in the background. We would love to go back and try the evening menu.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the main hotel to really soak up the atmosphere but the annexe is very comfort...

This was our second trip to Lewes visiting our sons at university. We called into the Pelham House on our first visit and decided to stay the next time we came and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived we were impressed by the friendliness and can do attitude of all the staff we met. The atmosphere throughout the hotel was a relaxed one but the professionalism of the service shone through.
The hotel was extremely clean and fresh with no signs of tiredness. We booked an evening meal which was of a very high standard and very reasonably priced. There was a good choice of cooked breakfasts; we went for the full English which was excellent.
I would recommend staying at the Pelham House Hotel and we will be staying there again the next time we visit.
