...exemplary service (funny & friendly yet still impeccably professional), imaginative food, & great cocktails.
We were in Brighton for a conference and booked a table as my friend had eaten here on a previous visit & been very impressed. A few weeks later they emailed to say that on this particular evening there was only a set menu as it was a food festival promotion night. I can't, therefore, comment on the usual menu, but the set menu was amazing - so much so that I asked for a copy of the menu so I could do "food porn" with foodie friends! I was vegetarian for 20-odd years, & one of the things which bugged me then was the tedious textural monotony of most restaurant vegetarian food. This meal was the antithesis of the knee-jerk slop-on-a-plate veggie food of the 80s & 90s - fabulous flavours, with thoughtful and effective contrast of textures & culinary wit (but with a light touch - so often culinary wit segues into pretension, but not here).
Our main waiter (sorry - we didn't get his name, but from an anecdote, possibly Barry...? Sonny's friend, anyway...) is amazing.
So all in all - thoroughly recommended. The set meal included fortune cookies, which included a dare or request. Mine was to be nice about good service at some point if I thought I'd had some. I always do that anyway, so the dare was, I guess, wasted on me, but this review is at least proof of my having done so!
