Mattress was uncomfortable. Windows and net curtains filthy. Bathroom door dirty and handle sticky. Wardrobe smelt strongly of varnish so could not put our clothes in it. Also there is nowhere to park there car parks are very expensive.

This hotel offers you peeling ceilings, badly chipped baths, mismatched lamps, free grime round your skirtings, duvets too small for the bed and cheap pillows all for an extortionate price and the convenience of being opposite the pier. I cannot believe how it has managed to get good reviews at the prices it charges for poor upkeep. There are many boutique hotels that would offer a better class of hotel than this and it is sad that an establishment with such history isn't better loved and cared for. This was once one of the glories of Brighton.

Room tip: Avoid Room 307

Our room was in the basement after walking along about 10 different corridors, it was hot, stuffy and dark. The room didn't smell very nice when we arrived, and wasn't that clean. Have to pay for wifi.

I have read some of the 'terrible' reviews, and I can't recognise the Royal Albion from the comments made. It is suspicious that there are so many bad reviews - they seem to be either 'drama queens' ("worst hotel i have ever stayed in"") or nit-pickers ("very small lift") and I could find no evidence of the "peeling wallpaper".

My personal experience is that, yes, there are a few small (very small) faults, but generally the decorations are very good - light and airy - and the lounge area is excellent although admittedly some of the easy-chair arms are a bit worn

The staff were very friendly and helpful and we had none of the problems at reception that others have complained about.

The restaurant was obviously geared to tourist-style meals (no a la carte menu) but all the food (two choices of starter, three choices of main course different every night) was good quality, very well prepared.

Our room was small but it had everything you would expect (unusually, two easy chairs and an upright) and when we complained that there was only one bedside lamp another was very quickly found.

The Royal Albion is convenient to shops, local sights (the Royal Pavilion is a few hundred yards away and the Palace Pier is right opposite) and busses, which go east and west as far as Portsmouth and Eastbourne, or north to Lewes and the Devil's Dyke (a local beauty spot).

Room tip: The third floor is very quiet

Decided to revisit Brighton for my birthday and although mixed reviews thought we would try .... faulty towers comes to mind. Didn’t spoil the visit tho as just laughed it off until it was bedtime. The bed was a double but seemed very small and not comfy at all. I never complain normally but felt I had to. Room overlooked Brighton pleasure pier, amazing view from room (window from room view). Was offered breakfast as an apology as still had another night in the bed from Hell. Was iron burns in the carpet and generally looked very sad in much needed decor redo. However the lounge area was beautiful and loved the paintings. Was nice to sit, chat, relax, enjoy a drink and people watch. Very much an older persons hotel which we enjoyed the peace to be honest. Had good and bad points but if your looking for somewhere to just use to sleep on a budget it’s fine. Was an excellent location and perfect for the nearby Lanes.
