When is free parking not free parking? When it's booked at the New Westcliff Hotel.

Contrary to the confirmation provided on our booking - made on May 11 - we were informed upon arrival that we had to pay £10 to park the car on the premises.

This was, we were informed, due to us having made the reservation through booking.com. We were also told by the gentleman in question that it was a policy that hadn't long been in place and there was ultimately nothing he or the hotel could do about it. His insistence this was the case in the absence of any real response ultimately beyond 'just because' wasn't exactly fair to our mind.

Annoyed at the principle of having to pay an unexpected £10, with little explanation why, we found our room to be exactly what you'd expect for the money - tidy, comfortable enough, if a little rough around the edges. No complaints there.

When departing the hotel in the morning, we again sought to understand through a different member of staff why the free parking shown clearly in our booking wasn't being honoured. This, the lady at reception informed us, had nothing to do with the hotel (then who?!) and couldn't help.

She also told us that she had been away for a week and the new policy had been put in place in this period - confirming the man present on our arrival had preferred to take our money rather than honour our booking as stated (again, we had reserved 10 days prior).

We were informed we could email the general manager and when I asked if I would be receiving her direct email address as it was being written down, told 'yes'. It was however, simply the generic reservations email address, and I was asked to request the attention of 'the general manager', with no name forthcoming.

The girl in question clearly meant well and was polite, but seemed as though she had already been scripted as to how to deal with the situation, in keeping with the vague reasoning we'd been given the night before.

I'm also aware we could quite easily have parked elsewhere at either greater inconvenience or cost. Ultimately, £10 is really no sum of money to fall out over, but it is the insensitive manner in which it was taken without consideration of the information agreed in our booking that has left us disappointed.

The chef and the restaurant are to be praised and the food is lovely. The bedrooms are small and the bathrooms are miniscule. That's the good part.
The Owner and the management team, the receptionists and bar staff appear to dislike paying guests. You might be ignored, they might be rude to you, or possibly both.
The hotel is well located and is in the same part of town as a lot of other hotels. You may wish to book elsewhere.

Room Tip: Select lower floors as the lift is small and slow

Without a doubt, this is one of the worst Hotels we have stayed at. First the Room. Admittedly we were booked in with a group at a Concessionary rate; nevertheless, the Double Room provided was the smallest I have ever had, and that includes many years of Business travel as a Singleton. No room to walk around the room and squeezing around the Bed, the bathroom was tiny, with the sink so small and a glass shelf above you banged head when cleaning teeth. The shower was equally small. On One evening we were woken at 1.30am by children, we later discovered, of the Management, who were having a Staff Party. These children were running up and down the stairs outside the rooms and in the lifts. We had to shout at them to stop, without effect. Two of our Group went down to Reception in their night attire to complain, but were met with' What do you expect - it's a Family Hotel' This makes a nonsense of the Lift notice asking for quiet outside the rooms. Complaints the next morning asking for management met similar non-caring attitude. The Children from the previous evening were running around reception with wet costumes from the Pool! If the Owners want to run it as a real Hotel for his family, Stop taking Paying Guests. Maybe that is why it has a history of so many previous reincarnations!? By Complete contrast, the Restaurant provides the most wonderful food, The evening meal, where as a group we had a choice of three starters, mains, and puddings, were most definitely A-La-Carte of the highest quality, a feeling shared by our whole group, and the Silver Service Staff here were really lovely. It is a pity that the Restaurant isn't open to the Public. Finally, and admittedly it was the worst weekend for the weather with snow and generally freezing conditions outside, the Lounge and Bar areas were very cold on all three evenings, and requests for heating were met with disdain and response 'it's on' (It wasn't until we complained). As a group we still had a lovely weekend enjoying Meeting up again, but the Hotel won't be on our re-visit list!
