Charles Darwin visited next door!
The good points about this hotel are:
1. The setting is stunning, on a raised site above Meadfoot beach in beautiful gardens
There are creaky floors etc, but this is an old,and probably listed building
2. The restaurant is well run, but the white tablecloths have disappeared, which is a shame. It has gone 'bistro' style, and lost some of the elegance.
The downside is:
1. Room like a greenhouse when you enter. (Front room facing sea) There are blinds but they are up, so the room is not habitable (July) Can only open windows 4 inches.
Did not sleep at all first night, as it was too hot. The bedding was too warm also, Kept asking for extra sheets for the bed, (to repace warm duvet) and finally got some in the evening, after asking three times at reception.
2. No umbrellas by the outdoor pool, or cushions for the loungers. Serious health and safety issue in summer. Could not stay by pool as too hot and no shade.
3. For a five or four star boutique or small hotel, should have been better service.

Room Tip: Sea views great, but try to get the room cool. Venetian blinds are provided but not drawn down when you arrive.

Loved it here for a family break. Staff were friendly from minute we arrived. Family room was fantastic. Pointlessly clean, large and great sea view. Liked that housekeeping came in every morning and replenished bottled water, tea/coffee & towels. Terrace bar nice and views amazing. We ate in the restaurant 3 nights and it was very good, as was breakfast. Outdoor swimming pool looked nice. We used the indoor pool which was fine but could do with a bit if an update sometime soon. Read some reviews saying corridors were dated - yes they were but you don't sleep in the corridors and they are obviously doing work.
Once slight concern, for if we returned - they were doing up a function room at the front of hotel for weddings, could this make a noise problem for guests in sea view rooms and parking I would think would become an issue....
