A lovely surprise find. Freshly renovated and authentic Portuguese pastries and dishes. The homemade pastries on display are WOW...see the photos!! Looking forward to trying out an evening meal here next.

We received a friendly welcome from a Portuguese family that made us super comfortable since our arrival. From the authentic Portuguese sardine and tuna patés to the stuffed squids of the today's dishes, all food is authentic Portuguese. A simple space where everybody can find Portuguese comfort, from main dishes to popular deserts and cakes to take away.

Lisbon Bakery and Restaurant occupies the two shop units previously occupied by Holland's retro faux American Diner. That business closed abruptly a few months ago but earlier this month the space has come back to life as Lisbon which is everything its predecessor was not. Gone is the clutter of USA memorabilia and the slightly disorganised cooking and customer service. The new set up is open and airy with bright white walls, black and white floor tiles, about three smiling welcoming and attentive faces, a great selection of pastries and other daytime food together with very good coffee and some startlingly tasty food. Prices are fair and on the competitive side. The feel is of an efficient and businesslike southern european coffee shop and cafe, very different in approach to the chain coffee shops or the homely English independents. I liked it a lot and wish it well. There was a lot of interest from passers by in the pedestrian precinct outside. I just hope that being at the bleak and distant end of town will not blight the future. With the two good Asian cafes in the pannier market, the Afro Caribbean place at the bottom of Cornwall St and Capriccio Italian restaurant all doing well close by, maybe things are looking up down here.

Popped in for a coffee and Portuguese custard tart which was excellent. Lovely friendly staff. The evening menu looked good as well.

Haven't eaten in the cafe, but I have been here several times for their delicious pastries. Their egg custard tarts are well worth a visit.
