We only had a weekend break here but from the minute we arrived at the Sands Resort Hotel and Spa we were made to feel very welcome.
The hotel is directly opposite the sea and our family suite had an amazing floor to ceiling window view of this. The rooms were large and tastefully decorated, with DVDs, PlayStation and board games (available free from reception). The facilities including kids clubs, outdoor/indoor pools, 2 play areas, bouncy castles (not in use when we were there as it was so windy, neither were the outdoor pools) and so much more. This meant we didn't even really leave the hotel much over the weekend. The food was plenty full and delicious, liked the family dining and the staff were all really friendly and helpful ... Yes to say we had a great weekend stay was an understatement! Many thanks!

We visited at the end of August 2017. Despite booking just 10 days prior, we paid quite a lot of money for our week, so seeing a sign hanging on the front lawn when we arrived "Late availability, from £55/night" wasn't a great start. The buildings are tired. we were worried the road in between our 1st floor room and the sea (nice view) would be noisy but in fact it was OK. The staff were friendly, efficient and polite and it's this which merits the 4 stars. However, a key reason we chose Sands was for the Kids' Clubs, to give Mum a complete break, and it was disappointing to be told (a) You cannot go off-site, and (b) You have to collect your 6 year-old at 11am and bring her back at 11.30am, so we never had more than 2 hours at a stretch and felt like we were constantly dropping off and picking up our two kids. The clubs were OK, and at least the kids were safe, but compared to a Mark Warner experience (unfair comparison perhaps) the clubs were not great in terms of excitement for the kids and engagement. The food was very good. The room was very good. The décor around the resort was 3-star at best.

Room Tip: 1st floor is perhaps the best compromise between good views and access (no lift)

We have been to Sands Resort for the past 6 years and yes we have booked again to go next year. Why? Because the staff are extremely friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Our son has a severe food phobia and they will cook his favourite food for him for lunch and supper with no fuss. Our daughter has special needs and at Sands Resort she can be herself. The Reception Staff even gave her imaginary friends towels to go to the pool. Even if the staff are extremely busy they will always speak to her, which she loves. She attends their children's club in the evenings and again they will cater for her needs with no fuss. Because our children are relaxed and happy it means that my husband and I can also have a proper holiday with great food and we are all treated like family. Our room is extremely comfortable and the bed is big enough for an extra one in the mornings! The pools and the pool areas are always clean as are all areas of the hotel. If you walk across a floor which is being mopped nobody minds and are always friendly. The outside play areas are great with enough space to run around in. If it is wet the staff will always try and help by putting a DVD on for the children so the parents can still relax. If you are in any doubt my advise would be to book now to avoid disappointment!

Room Tip: Top floors have the best sea views. On a busy road but cannot hear traffic unless door is open

We booked on basis of overall reviews. Nothing was horrendous, but overall Sands needs some investment and some thought around policies.
One of the most challenging aspects of running a hotel is finding the right staff. This is one area Sands Resort stands out. From our welcome to the bar to the kids activities we were welcomed with smiles and great customer service.
A late arrival let us sample the restaurant in the evening. Expensive and poor I'm afraid. The steak was appalling quality. The salmon had been plated up for hours - we think. Whichever way you look at it £110 for 5 was a lot of money.
A huge gripe: Breakfast runs 7:30 to 9:30am we were told. After a long journey and a latish night we arrived at breakfast on the first morning at, an admittedly late, 9:20 to be told there were no more eggs, beans or bacon coming out. This is really poor. End breakfast at 9am if this is your policy. The quality of food: Ok. Best part is you toast your own bread so it's fresh and to your liking.
Finally, we were not allowed to sit in the front area of the restaurant as it's reserved for adults. This part of the restaurant has the best views out over the sea. An adult policy in what is billed as a family hotel...

The pools: The outdoor one is small and gets packed. The indoor one was never full, but is again small and the chlorine count was off the scale. Took hours for eyes to re-adjust after. As a side note, the steam room - off the side of the indoor pool - is fantastic.
The bar: An odd, unwelcoming room. Only ever saw one person sitting in there. Good prices though. The hotel's own label wines very good value.
The activities and games rooms are all great. As others have mentioned the idea around borrowing wet suits and wind breaks is clever.
Special mention to the maze. Kept our kids entertained for hours!

Our rooms were on the first floor, interconnecting with a sea view. You are on Watergate Road though, so bear in mind if traffic noise annoys you. They were ok but not worth the £300/night we paid. Felt claustrophobic, with furniture blocking doors opening fully or two people unable to stand at end of bed for example. And they were hot. The bathrooms were also incredibly small. Ours had no hooks or towel rail so each day our towels were draped over doors to dry. The basin's are small making shaving really tough. Beds ok for us, the double was a king size...

Overall, in some respects the hotel is trying too hard to be all things to all people. It tips the scales at the expensive end of affordable and we didn't feel it was worth it. We will not return.

Room Tip: Depends on view + road noise or no view + quiet.

We stayed here with our 2 children who are 6 and 4. The hotel does not look at all impressive on approaching but the interior is better. I would rate the hotel/room/food 3 star but the facilities for children in particular I would rate a 4.

Room: we stayed in a country view suite. Cleanliness was ok apart from some cobwebs. There was a fridge but it didn't seem too efficient. The children's room had a balcony attached and was linked by a corridor to our room (open plan). We were next to the corridor which was a little noisy, the room was too hot with no air conditioning or windows to open on that side. The bathroom was fine, shower gel is provided. The rooms would be better the other way round, so parents could sit on the balcony once the children are in bed. It would also be nice to get body lotion etc

Activities/Children: The resort is very family friendly. Our children attended a pottery painting class and also the Adventure club which they enjoyed and the team were all lovely. Indoor swimming pool is small but didn't seem busy. The outdoor pool was fine for the children. The grounds were lovely, nice to have a bouncy castle and there were several play areas. Note, you pay extra for the clubs, around £8 per session per child.

Food: We had lunch on 2 occasions and both times this was disappointing and a bit expensive. Quality was very average and choice was quite limited. My panini was barely grilled and I would have asked for it to be cooked further but we didn't see the waitress after the food was brought over. The children's 'sundae' which compromised of 2 teeny scoops of ice cream, which mini marshmallows and sprinkles was £4.50, I thought this was pretty poor. Breakfast was ok. usual continental and cooked options but not a large variety (i.e. only croissants and pain au chocolate, no crumpets or pancakes) and the pastries/bread were very low quality.

I wouldn't book again, it sits between budget and luxury hotels but is priced towards the higher end (£250+ per night) but without the more luxurious feel you might expect for the price. With some improvements, in particular with rooms/food, this could be a really lovely resort.
