“Great for watching the surfers”
Reviewed 17 January 2012

This beach is not as easily accessible as Fistral, as unless you are staying at the apartments is accessed by approx 130 steep steps. The beach is very popular with surfers - I had a surf lesson on the beach from an instructor based at the surf school on Fistral beach which was great fun and very reasonable. There are toilets on the beach, but when we visited (January) the restaurants/cafes were all closed.

“Tolcarne Beach one of Newquays many fabulous beaches”
Reviewed 7 September 2011

We've been regular visitors to Newquay over the last 30 odd years. Tolcarne Beach is great, well managed by the lifeguards who do their job ensuring the safety of surfers and bathers alike. The beach is cleared of seaweed/debris each morning, surf schools set up, theres a beach shop, wetsuit and deckchair hire, a cafe which serves meals into the evening and its mostly fully booked so that speaks for itself, plus a coffee/snack bar. There are apartments which can be hired so you stay right on the beach. The downside is the steps you have to climb to get back to the main road or alternatively you can walk up the winding road but even this is quite steep near the top. But after a brilliant day on the beach you really dont mind. When the tide is out you can walk from Tolcarne, to Great Western Beach, to Towan Beach the views are magnificent.

“Great place to surf and swim”
Reviewed 6 September 2011

We visited this beach as first time surfers with Dolphin Surf school (thanks for a great day) and were amazed at how good it was. It is a public beach with a surf hire, cafe and locally renowned restaurant. There is plenty of space on the beach for families and surfers, as most of the surfing takes place as the tide is on its way out. The lifeguards are there to look after everybody on the beach and especially those in the sea (thanks guys). The reason they shout at people is usually because they are in the wrong place (and its usually the surfers who have wandered into the swim designated areas). There is plenty of space for both and tons of room on the beach itself. The only notes of caution are the amount of surfers (as its NEWQUAY) it gets to be quite croded and the rip current (which tends to be why the surfers get out of position and in the swim zones). Otherwise its great.
