We stayed at The Nyton for a night during a tour of the Midlands and North England. When we arrived (about 8pm) there was nobody on reception. Our keys were there with a note welcoming us and directing us to our room. Our room was quite tired. Dated decor with a recently refreshed but minuscule bathroom. Breakfast in the morning was very tasty and the staff their serving were attentive and pleasant, but again, when we left, Reception was unmanned so we dropped our keys on the desk and left. Such a shame.

On the one hand, an excellent location, a short walk from the centre of Ely, with a lovely garden - though a bench or two would be a good addition as there is one rather decrepit one. The breakfasts were fine, a good full English. The room was well equipped, though rather small for a family room, but there were only two of us so that wasn't so important - though the bathroom was quite tiny. The bed was comfortable.

On the other hand, there was a noise problem. We could hear the TV from the next room, which was irritating, especially before 7am! More annoying was the fact that the (ground floor) room was right next to the Gents' toilet for the bar, and every time someone used it the hand dryer was audible and the door to the corridor went SLAM when the user left. There was a party one night and we could hear people shouting at around 10.30pm. Some noise went on until after midnight. I would expect better than this for a four-star hotel

The references to Fawlty Towers in some reviews is amusing - one night the fire alarm kept going off. It wasn't a fire, or even a drill!

Room tip: Avoid Room 9, next to the toilet.

We were in Ely for a family wedding we came up the day before and stayed in the Nyton. Had read reviews on line and wasn't hopefull.
The house is the owners child hood home and it looks like it has been decorated since.
The owner was kind, helpful, funny. The rooms are clean, maybe a bit basic, definitely dated, but everything worked. The room was at the back of the house and was very quiet. Breakfast was very nice above average, and was served by a helpful kind waitress.
Was it worth £100 for a twin maybe not, but it's five minute walk from the town centre so worth extra for that alone.
View from the garden to the Cathedral

This place is good for a laugh, no permanent reception or bar, we had to have bar opened to get a cold drink. Very dated for a 4star hotel and could do with a facelift. Room was ok but very hot and couldn't get windows open. Shower wasn't very powerful and had to be run for a long time for water to get hot, then shower screen leaked all over floor so mopped up with towels. Breakfast was edible but just ok when we had full English and poached eggs next morning were hard and overlooked. Plenty of shouting from the kitchen by owner who is just like basil faulty. Worst bit for us though was a house next door had a garden party till gone midnight and were very noisy, not hotels fault I know. Then just after 7am we were woken by Tina Turner And Michael Jackson being blasted out on the sound system by the owner who was obviously starting breakfast in the kitchen. This seems to be a regular event looking at other reviews, and to top it off when he did turn it down the kitchen extractor came on and this sounded like a grinder in the the room.
In summary it was funny looking back but that may be due to lack of sleep. This place could be so much better and the location is spot on, just a 10min. walk into Ely. Needless to say we wouldn't stay here again.
