Earlier in the day, Kostas the co-owner invited the 4 of us to visit him and his wife Voula at their restaurant in Meza for what he said would be an authentic Cretan meal.
We were a bit skeptical of the impromptu sales pitch at first but decided to give it a shot after inquiring about the restaurant with a third party. Even though we were staying very close by, getting to Maza through the county roads in pitch dark wasn't obvious and for a moment we thought we wouldn't find the darn place.
But finding it we did as it was pretty much the only thing alive that night, right by the old church in Maza, framed by magnificent bougainvillea flowers.
And once we got there...boy were we in for a treat!
Kostas recognized us and, even though the terrace was packed on a Tuesday evening, table and chairs appeared out of nowhere to accommodate us.
He proposed all items and, carried by his passion for Cretan cuisine, we just went with it. We genuinely enjoyed appetizers and main dish equally. Still fresh in mind are the Cretan salad, meatballs, pork chops, stewed beans and a very fair house wine (white). Of course a little bit of Raki complements of the house to go with dessert helped finish a memorable evening under the Cretan stars where we were treated like family by very welcoming folks. We would highly recommend it for those looking for an authentic, if a bit rustic, Cretan meal (and good value for money if I may say so).
