I recently stayed at the Scandinavian Rukahovi hotel as part of a Crystal Ski half board package deal. The hotel is in an excellent location, in fact, I don’t think it could be any better! 20 seconds walk and you’re at the gondola. Covid restrictions in Finland meant that bars had to close at 5 pm and restaurants at 6 pm although takeaway dinner is available in the hotel until 7pm. I actually quite enjoyed the buffet dinners and tried some new things like reindeer, moose and pike! As well as the hot buffet selections (normally one meat, one fish and one vegetarian dish) there was always a salad bar, two dessert options and a tea/coffee bar. Breakfasts were lovely and plentiful with options to suit all including a separate gluten free station. It was taken in the large 3rd floor restaurant overlooking the slopes. It was very nice to see the restaurant staff sitting down to eat their breakfast after the buffet was closed. I stayed in a superior room which was very spacious with a balcony (looking over the back but I did get some good views-see picture attached!) The room had a sofa, a comfy chair, two comfy beds, a large dressing table, large wardrobe and hanging area, a drying cabinet and a huge bathroom with an amazing hot and powerful shower. There was also a hairdryer in the bathroom. There were no central controls for the heating but we did not have the radiator on all week as it was plenty warm enough, in fact, we opened the balcony door slightly on a few nights to let some nice fresh air in. The superior rooms are in the main part of the hotel as you exit the lifts and luckily our room was on the third floor which also housed the breakfast restaurant and the saunas. Saunas are separate for men and women. There are signs in saying no more than two persons right now because of covid restrictions but I rarely saw anyone else in there when I went. There is a playroom for children opposite the saunas and in the large reception area there is a pool table, sledges to hire and board games. There are quite a few areas to sit down and relax there but we weren’t sure if you could after 6pm just now. Also in the ground floor is the ski room. It is large and houses individual cages which you can get a key for from reception. Certainly very handy instead of carrying your equipment up and down to your room. On that note, I was shocked on a couple of occasions to see people coming to dinner in their ski boots. The restaurant floors are wooden and as I saw on a couple of occasions can be quite slippy. I personally found it quite rude and unsafe (dropping snow onto the floors) to not even have the decency to pop them off. Oh I’m fact, I did see one guy take them off at the table he’d sat at, right next to the buffet. Imagine the smell! Maybe a reminder in the room info and restaurant entrance that ski boots shouldn’t be worn in there?
Anyway, would I return to the hotel? Yes I would. The staff were all lovely and friendly despite me only knowing a couple of words of Finnish. The hotel is clean, well presented and like I said at the start, is in the best location in Ruka :)

Room tip: A superior room is good as it has a sofa, a fridge, a balcony and is in the main building so not far to walk

Hi 994tezc,

Thank you for taking time to review our hotel and share your experiences. It is good to hear that your stay with us went well and you got to enjoy the short distance we have to the slopes. I will forward your note on the ski boots in restaurant. It is shame that corona restrictions had effect on your holiday, but hopefully next time you get to enjoy our country and hotel without them.

Sincerely yours,
Katariina/Reception

Ruka's a small resort, with a lot of charm. We stayed in Ruka several years ago, and noted the great location of the Rukahovi hotel, so it was our first choice this time around. We're glad we did - we're staying in a superior room, which is spacious and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the gondola lift, ski slopes and town centre, making for some great photographs. There's free wifi. Leisure facilities at the hotel itself are limited, but with some great skiing and lots of opportunities for winter activities on your doorstep, I'd be surprised if anyone would be spending a lot of time indoors. The hotel's location is fantastic - in the middle of everything, and literally a few yards from the new gondola lift and rental shop. There's a cosy bar and restaurant area and a separate restaurant area for breakfast - unfortunately all closed at 6pm due to Covid restrictions, but that's not the hotel's fault, and all venues in Ruka are currently under the same restrictions. Staff have been friendly and helpful at all times. The room has been kept clean and warm. We booked full board, and are getting a choice of three courses for dinner, focusing on local specialities - salads, soups, burgers, dishes and desserts - with fresh salmon, reindeer, mushrooms and berries featuring heavily. The menu doesn't change, but we've enjoyed everything we've eaten very much. Breakfast is excellent and has featured a large choice of Finnish and continental dishes, with some fresh local berries, breads and juices. The room has a few rough edges, but they're minor - blown bulbs, sharp edges on a crack in the shower door - but it has a drying cabinet, lots of storage space, efficient heating and a screened vent to the outdoors to moderate the heat. We got a free lockable ski store, right next to reception, which was very useful. The balcony was a great feature, with large windows looking up to the slopes, which are lit up at night - stunning views. You really can't beat the location of this place if you're looking to stay in Ruka village itself - a short trip in the gondola gives access to Ruka valley, and the nursery slopes on the other side of the hill. The gondola is weather-dependent, so doesn't run all the time, and you're reliant on the ski bus to get to the nursery slopes if it's not running. If you want the better shopping, food and entertainment in Ruka village though, this hotel is a winner. Location can't be beaten, the food is a well-cooked selection of local specialities, and the staff are great. We'd heartily recommend it.

Hi RasIOM,

We are happy to hear that your experience with us was good and that you enjoyed our location in Ruka village. It is good to hear that our superior room and the slope view were to your liking and hope that your holiday was fantastic. Hopefully we will be seeing you again and next time there will not be corona restrictions and you get to enjoy our restaurant and lobby bar fully. It is good to hear that our restaurant and breakfast were good.
We will be contacting the maintenance regarding possible cracks or sharp edges on shower tiles as that can be dangerous and will need to be fixed.

Sincerely yours,
Katariina / Reception Scandic Rukahovi

The quality of the room is ok but of a distance from reception up a lift and down and up stairs so if you have mobility issues that’s a problem. No sauna in room I was led to believe there would be and all saunas out of order or you have to pay! pool table out of order and food no al carte just cold gloop if your going half board. Restaurants close at 8 due to covid no nightclub nothing to do part from ski and sleep

Great location in central position of Ruka Village. It is truely ski-in, ski-out hotel. Rooms have not been refurbished in whole (our room had newly done bathroom but not bedroom). If you want to have something fancy, this definitely is not your choice. But in my opinion there is a good value for your money at this hotel.
Breakfast has something for everyone and tables were cleaned quickly. If you ski, there is a ski room where you can keep your skis and don't need to take those to your room. There is a drier in the room (for ski clothes, helmets, boots etc).
