We drove a considerable distance to come to see this gallery, which was meant to be a highlight of our vacation. It was our only reason to visit Owen Sound. Imagine our disappointment when we discovered, after paying our admission 'donation', that the entire Tom Thomson collection had been removed to be photographed! Why would a curator not have arranged for at least half of the works to be photographed at a time while leaving the other pieces hung to be enjoyed by visitors, and then switch it up? Tourists would be happier, and likely more understanding. seeing 50% of the Thomson works rather than none at all.
The remainder of the collection by other artists, however, was beautifully displayed and we greatly enjoyed the space and our time with these pieces. Lovely gift shop. Call ahead to make certain that what you are planning to see is indeed there.

We had been introduced to Tom Thomson in the art galleries in Quebec, Montreal and Ottawa and were thrilled to discover this gallery. It is delightful and has a lovely collection of paintings. The section on Tom Thomson is excellent with a good film and great explanatory boards. We wished we could have spent more time there but were under pressure to get to a ferry

The gallery has 2 rooms of permanent Tom Thomson display - small paintings only but also associated letters, artifacts, etc, very informative. It also has several rooms of temporary displays, interesting and thought-provoking ones currently by a Romany and aboriginal artists. Nice gift shop too with many hand-made items. I highly recommend it; and since entry is by donation, if you find you aren't very interested you needn't pay much.

Immersed in the history of the life of Tom Thomson. I was excited to have the opportunity to visit the gallery. Always loved the Group of Seven and the work of Emily Carr, amongst others. I was not disappointed. From the welcome by the young man at the desk, by the display and small gift shop, to the venue and set up of the art, video of the history, personal letters from Tom to his work and gifts of his family to the walls of the museum-made his journey into the Algonguin Park a pleasure to follow. Despite how close I live to Kleinburg, I have yet to see the Group of Seven but it is on my list...This is a lovely gallery and a wonderful place to see visually our history come alive. They have speaker series, giftware from local artists and an exhibit from First Nations people-particularly in this case -the Eskimo people. I learned so much from the pictures and the willingness of people to share their stories. The cost is minimal-suggested $5.00 but it is by donation with no fixed price. That was a nice surprise.
