Deep Cove has been a favorite day out of mine for a few years now - when it's not insanely busy! The last time I went in September, we took over an hour of circling around the town trying to find somewhere to park. Would definitely recommend transiting in if you are going during a busy time (weekends when it's hot.)
Deep Cove Kayak is always worth it - again if it's busy and you haven't booked ahead you might have to wait for some space to open up. Think about bringing a spare pair of shorts/pants as you may get a damp behind.
One of my favorite activities is to hike the end part of the Baden-Powell trek. There is a trail-head located amongst some houses a 5 minute walk from the main car park, away from the shops. The hike is about 1/2 hour - 45 minutes each way, and ends at a fabulous lookout point above the cove. Can be quite busy, but less known to the throngs of tourists.
The shops are neat, but touristy and expensive, as are the cafes and restaurants on the main street. The gelato is worth checking out.
Beautiful place to spend a day or an afternoon, best to try and go early (before everyone else gets there) or during a quieter time.
