We went there after a visit to the Richmond Olympic Experience. Staff did not seem to be very motivated, though friendly. Food quality was medium. The pizza took a while and the crust was slightly burned. Place definitely driven by its location and there are not much alternatives around.

This eatery is located inside the Richmond Olympic Oval complex that played host to the Olympic long track speed skating in 2010. It is a cafeteria style deli restaurant with muffins, breakfast items, smoothies, homemade soups and sandwiches, pizzas and salads.

My spouse and I were here for a quick lunch after exercising. We shared a curry kale vegetable soup and the sliced turkey and bacon on cranberry bread sandwich combo to share that cost $9.45 plus taxes.

There was a nice curry taste to the soup which I enjoyed. My spouse’s comment was that the soup wasn’t chunky enough.

The turkey and bacon on cranberry bread was an above average sandwich in terms of taste.

I’ve eaten at the O Café maybe 3 or 4 times and found the food taste inconsistent. In the past, I have tried the roasted vegetable sandwich which was good and most recently before this review the sausage roll which was very bland; lacking herbs and spices. For beverages, I have tried the coffee and smoothies. The quality of the coffee has improved and the smoothies are very good.

The employees are generally personable.

Rating breakdown
• Portion size and value – 3 out of 5; slightly above average
• Food taste – inconsistent but okay; room for improvement – 3 out of 5
• Atmosphere and service – 3.25 out of 5; generally good

This is not a bad place to have a quick bite to eat. I would rate this eatery 3 out of 5 – average. If it wants to be a “4 star” restaurant, it needs to have more consistent food quality in terms of taste.

Notes and Tips:
• This small eatery has seating for about 20 people inside and a covered outdoor patio.
• After the Olympics, the Oval was converted to a multi-purpose sports and events facility including 2 Olympic sized skating rinks, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor track and a climbing wall.
• The Olympic Oval is also home to the Richmond Olympic Experience (“ROX”); the only Olympic Museum in North America
• You can take advantage of a free Olympic Oval tour by pre-booking on the Oval website. A free guided tour, booked in advance, shouldn’t take you more than an hour.
• The Olympic Oval venue is within 1 1/2 miles (2 kilometres) of the Richmond “downtown” core that includes Richmond Centre shopping mall and is close to the Canada Line. By transit from Vancouver take the Canada Line to the last stop in Richmond – Brighouse and then catch the community bus – C94 at the bottom of the stairs on Number Three Road. The bus stops at the Oval.
• If you’re coming from downtown Vancouver by private transportation, I would recommend the Art Laing Bridge (same bridge to YVR Vancouver airport). Once you’re on the bridge, stay right to veer off from the road to the airport and travel approximately 1 miles on Russ Baker Way; stay in the left lane and then make a left at the Dinsmore Bridge, go over the bridge, take the first right off the bridge. Once you’re on the Dinsmore Bridge you will see the Oval on the right side.

We first visited the Richmond Olympic Oval soon after the 2010 Winter Olympics to use their speed skating rink for public skating. Slowly the prices increased and the facilities became more popular. During those formative years there was no place to even purchase a bottle of water. We recently learned of the O Cafe and decided to revisit "the Oval". The O Cafe offers coffee, drinks, baked goods, sandwiches, pastas and soup. The prices are not outrageous but the portions are somewhat smaller.
