“Paradise in a Rice Paddy”
Reviewed 6 March 2012

Everyone deserves a stay at the Four Seasons in Chiang Mai. Were it not included in our February 2012Tauck tour of Viet Nam, Cambodia and Thailand, we would have missed this indulgence. Bungalows surround a beautifully a sculpted and manicured rice paddy. The rooms are "humungous", complete with private patio and a bathroom/dressing room looking out onto a private meditation garden.
The breakfast buffet is resplendent in offerings from dim sum to freshly cut mangos. Dining al fresco in the morning light has to be one of life's gifts to any traveler.
The Thai buffet offered one evening offered a vast array of grilled meats, naan and delicious Thai desserts in portions small enough to allow one to sample more than just a few. There is also an Italian restaurant on the grounds. The entrees are continental and complemented w/ pasta and pizza offerings.
The only thing I did not like was the packaging of the amenities. The refillable/recyclable ceramic containers make it hard to discern gel from shampoo and I worried that I would drop one of the containers. Also, I like to know the name of the product I'm using.
The staff is particularly welcome and gracious. They are more than helpful in making one's stay perfect. I was particularly impressed w/ the speed in which they remembered names and fulfilled requests.

I stayed at the Four Seasons Resort in Chiang Mai Thailand from February 13-17 with my wife and three teenage children. The resort is located about 30 minutes outside of the city. We were picked up at the airport by the hotel van and were given cold bottled water and cool washcloths.

Upon arrival we were greeted with fragrant floral leis and more cool washcloths. We needed two rooms because we were five people. They offered to rent me one of their residences for an extra 10,000 Thai Baht per night, which we declined. The rooms that we reserved were just what we wanted.

The rooms were gorgeous and were situated directly on the rice paddies. They left us fresh fruit each day with a guide to explain the exotic offerings. Room service was unobtrusive and the hotel provided nightly turndown service. Try for a room on the second floor to avoid hearing footsteps above you at night.

The resort grounds and facilities were stunningly beautiful and serene. There was an army of grounds keepers watering and manicuring the place. There are large trees and resident water buffalo that give the place an authentic Thai feel. At five pm the grounds keepers would march off into the sunset banging a drum.

The food and service at the restaurants were excellent but absurdly pricy. The breakfasts for the five of us was more than $180 USD per day for a buffet breakfast. Lunch and dinner was about another $550 USD per day. The Internet was not included which was disappointing as they charged me about $100 USD. There was high speed WIFI but the extra cost is is a turn off. At these prices they should throw in the Internet. Nothing was included and at the end of the trip the extra costs were substantial.

The staff was super friendly and the service was excellent. There is a free shuttle service into Chiang Mai which we took advantage of.

As nice as this place was I would not go back however because I felt like they take advantage of the fact that you are in the middle of nowhere and have little choice but to eat at the resort. If they were smart they would increase the room rate and throw in free breakfast and Internet to keep people from feeling like they got fleeced.

Dear Mr. Russo,

I am delighted to see that overall you and your family enjoyed yourselves very much and had a great time during your stay with us last month. It is very gratifying to see that all the hard work and efforts our staff have put into their training enable our guests to have a memorable and wonderful experience at the resort.

Many thanks also for your comment regarding the prices within the resort. We actually conduct a comparative price survey periodically with other five-star hotels both in Chiang Mai and around the country in order to keep our prices competitive with theirs. In addition, the seemingly very expensive prices for alcohols is due to the import tax. Unfortunately Thailand levies a very high import tax on all luxury goods: whiskey and vodka are taxed at 50-100%; however all wine and wine-based alcohols are taxed at 200-400% depending on popularity. Consequently the prices are pushed up to what may seem as very expensive in the west.

With regard to the internet charge, in recent years with the explosion of personal devices requiring an internet connection, accessibility has become a key amenity. To meet the fast-changing needs of our guests, Four Seasons properties have made a significant investment to be able to deliver enhanced internet services, including increased bandwidth and signal strength, in addition to the technical staff support that our guests have come to expect. As these changes are implemented, more Four Seasons hotels are offering a tiered pricing approach to internet access. Guests can opt for a basic Internet connection or a selection of premium Internet connections that offer greater bandwidth needed when operating multiple devices or using large files like movies or video programming. It is our hope to add this option in the near future for our guests as well.

Nevertheless, in spite of your reservations regarding our pricing, I still sincerely hope that you may allow us another opportunity to welcome you and your family back to Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai again in the future..

With best wishes,

Titiya Chooto (Ms)

Absolutely one of the best hotels of the world; not many guests (64 rooms I think), so no seminars......only quiet and discreet people. One day a group arrived, and the restaurant managed to separate them from the other guests who wanted to dine quietly

My wife, five-year old son and I are just back from a perfect five-night stay at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai. We have only good things to report.

The Staff: The best! J, Tay, Pete, Joy and everyone by the pool and at the restaurant were so kind and provided great service. Header in the Gecko Club was so great with our son. Making kites and feeding the fish were two activities with Header that my son just loved. Dee and JJ were very helpful around the restaurant, providing great advice on food throughout our stay. We already miss our new friends from the staff!

The food: The Thai food, which we focussed on, was nothing but delicious. Perfectly spiced, just the right portion size and the freshness and flavor of the food was nothing but exceptional. The breakfast was really nice (I recommend including that in your hotel package) and the room service was top notch. We loved eating dinner as a family out on our sala. Poolside food and drink were all excellent.

The setting: We loved our room. Furnishing, amenities all of top quality (I would ignore negative comments in other reviews on this). The grounds are truly exceptional. The rice paddies, the art, the grounds are all truly beautiful.

Surroundings: We highly recommend a trip to the Elephant Camp (concierge will make arrangements) and the Wat Prathap Doi Suthep Mountain temple. Both were hits with the whole family.

We highly recommend the Four Seasons Chiang Mai and can't wait for a return visit!

This hotel was definitely a highlight of our trip!! Having stayed at a few Four Seasons in the past, we have come to recognize and appreciate the level of service and the experience that the Four Seasons has to offer and this property did not disappoint at all!!! A beautiful oasis- that makes you appreciate the true countryside of Thailand- the people there could not have been nicer, or more accommodating!!! The rooms are spacious and clean, the food was excellent (including the breakfast buffets, which was our favorite). We only wish we had planned more time to stay!!! One complaint- they charge you to use WI-fi internet around the property!! Would have much rather they added $10/night to the cost of the room and given free WI-fi. but that is just me.......

Dear dbrooke11,

I am delighted to read how much you enjoyed your stay with us and that you had a great time during your honeymoon. Please allow me to share your appreciation to the staff who will be glad to know that their services have provided you with a memorable and unforgettable experience on such an important occasion. With regard to the wifi charge, this is in order for us to maintain our system to the high level expected by our guest. Nevertheless, your feedback is important and will be taken into consideration when we next review the pricing strategy for this area which is planned for later in the year.

Once again, warmest congratulations on your wedding and we shall look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you both back to Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai again in the not too distant future - perhaps for a longer visit on your first wedding anniversary!
