“Nice Cheap Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed 23 February 2012

We went here for lunch on a Sunday with a couple of friends. We had 2 courses for £10. Although the portions weren't massive the food was really nice. I had pheasant sausage which was cooked and served really well. My friend and I were tempted by the crackling on the pork dish and asked if we could have some crackling with the sausages and they happily provided this for us. This was all washed down with a couple of ales and a desert that I can't quite remember what it was but was served with creme anglais. Very nice atmosphere, cheap and a nice meal. Worth a visit.

Had a really fantastic dinner at the Ship & Castle last week. There was a big group of us which made no difference to the service or quality of food. Very good food and a great venue. Went there last year and it was not so good - think there may be a new chef as the menu had a lot more fish. Have to say the service was excellent also, as it was last time.

We stayed for a weekend in the Boma room, which was really well decorated and with lots of nice personal touches that you wouldn't find in a commercial hotel. Only slight issue was the lighting, which was a bit dim but overall this wasn't really a problem. We had lunch one day (some exceptionally good mussels), and then dinner. Dinner was superb, even more so when we were told it was the 18 year old commis chef as the two main chefs were on sick leave. Everything was beautifully cooked and well presented; couldn't have asked for better. Highly recommended if you're down in this part of the world. Thank you!

Hunted it down via the AA app on the iPhone. Only limited choise on there - but looked like it was worth the 10 minute detour from the M5 for lunch.
Definately not. Why do pubs feel they can not offer a decent snack menu for anyhting less that £7.50. £7.50 for a sandwitch!!

Anyway we decided to spend the extra 50p and get the fish and chips. Totally rubbish. The fish was about the size of a white board marker - thin and not that great at all.

I then realised my wife had ordered the Fish and Chips child portion for my two year old - and the had the cheek to serve this at £7.00 !!!

Never again.

We have had several meals at the Ship and Castle, incuding a Sunday Lunch, weekday lunch and evening meal and recently a Saturday evening. Couldn't fault the welcome, the service or the food on all occasions. My other half had a goat cheese starter which he said was delicious and so did a couple of others of our party, I had the duck with betroot, very tasty. The main turkey was delicious and served in a roll with stuffing with chestnuts, small roast and sprouts, the others had the loin of pork. All said how tasty it was. The Christmas pudding and sauce was absolutely delicious, light and full of flavour and wasn't stodgy like some. The waitress was lovely, very helpful and everything arrived hot and with not too long a wait. I have met friends there just for a drink and we asked if we could have bowls of chips to nibble as we didn't want to eat a meal and these were provided with no problem. I have read the other reviews and it seems like a different place but personally I have always had lovely meals and will certainly be going back.
