Unlike many beaches in Tuscany, this cove is free, without rows upon rows of beach clubs. It has trees boarding it and is beautifully unspoilt. In the middle of the cove is a small beach club which has a cafe and hires out canoes and pedalo's which are great fun. Clear shallow, warm waters ... perfecto

Since San Vincenzo beaches are not free ( except for some small areas in between private beaches) we decided to explore other beaches outside the city. We found out a very nice gulf named Baratti, where beaches are free and clean and sand shines as if some of its grains are made of gold. We enjoyed the pine wood backing the beach for a fresh afternoon rest. A mobile bar is also located in the wood, and cooks excellent local food that you can taste under the trees. Public toilets are also available.

I don't know about theBagno, but the little hut that serves as bar is great. Very tasty cocktails and great piattine with nibbles after 6, free with drinks. And than wait for the sun to go down before heading for dinner somewhere.

If you want to go to the beach but the seemingly endless line of beach clubs along the coast at Viareggio fills you with horror or despair then Baratti might be the antidote.

Baratti beach has a mix of public and private beach areas but large swathes of it are public. You access the beach via a short walk through beautifully shady pine trees. Depending on where along the beach you are you can either set up directly on the beach or back among the pines.

Having been a few times our preference is (coming from the San Vincenzo direction) to carry on beyond the long lines of cars parked up in the free parking spaces and eventually (when it looks like you've overshot) turn right at the roundabout and follow round the headland up to the carpark next to the archaeological site just before the little port area.

To be clear, it is a public beach so (a) it is busy (b) there are not all the creature comforts of the resort beach clubs and (c) it is not manicured. All of that said we have never found it too claustrophobic even on busy days, if you go towards the porto end there is a bar and restaurant. Alternatively you can do what most Italians do and come prepared with coolbag etc. Best of all, busy though it is, it is a beautiful natural environment in contrast to the hardscaped commercial areas around Viareggio etc.

Finally it's not just the beach. As mentioned you have an etruscan archaeological site along with Populonia just a bit further along with it's etruscan history and stunning views over the golfo di Baratti.
