If you are going to the Douro Valley and want something warm and charming this is not the place. Its very cold and feels a tad like an institution. The rooms are very nice and large with a big patio and view. The pool is absolutely beautiful but the rest of the hotel is cold and impersonal. Not for us, but if you are looking to lay by the pool and use the spa or have kids this may be a better fit.

I stayed here in September 2019 and, although I was quite looking forward to my holiday with my family, this hotel was deeply unimpressive. There were some truly bizarre aspects to the hotel - it is like it was designed by a person who never stayed in a 5* hotel before.

Some positives:
1. Breathtaking view: this was a real winner. The view from the rooms and the infinity pool is fantastic,
2. The restaurant is pretty good (serves mostly gourmet-like Portuguese traditional dishes),
3. Good spa treatments,
4. Nice bed.

The negatives:
1. The room - cheap furniture. There were marks on the walls. There were stains on the carpet. The walls feel like they are made of paper.
2.The bathroom - appalling. Clean, but cheap tile, terrible finishing touches (there was industrial super glue on the door). The toilet lid is made of plastic. It looks very much like a Californian motel bathroom,
3. Room amenities - no hair conditioner!? It is 2019 and most women (and men) would consider that essential,
4. Room service menu - very limited,
5. The hotel more generally - corridors need A LOT of work. Cheap carpet, terrible finishing touches (lots of marks on the walls and carpet stains). And, strangely, there are beautiful areas that are not being used to their full potential (lovely gardens, lovely terraces, but nowhere to sit down and enjoy them),
6. Sauna and Steam Room - bizarrely located in the middle of the 6th floor. Again... cheap pink tile. The atmosphere was not very relaxing. And, although this is probably a personal preference, I thought both the sauna and the steam room were a bit cold,
7. Pool bar - bizarre. Cheap furniture, no atmosphere. I had a gin & tonic (which was delicious) but was served in a plastic gin goblet? I thought this might have been deliberate (we are near a pool so broken glass can be an issue), but my partner's beer was served in a glass cup? Food was ok, but I would expect more of a 5* hotel,
8. Breakfast - generally good and a lot of choice. However, the cereal was stale and the orange juice is cold-pressed (and filled with sugar) and not freshly squeezed.

There is so much potential here for this hotel to be absolutely fantastic, but it just is not a 5* hotel.

Special day, looking for a special experience, locations Amazing, Room Top Notch, service for Dinner at Valentines day really a disappointment, for a 5 stars Hotel they should be better organized, the service enexistent, they forgot us, toke nearly 2 hour and half to get served, full house, more staff was needed, they forgot us to serve after dinner drink, the main meal was poorly served, really poor service, we were the last ones to leave together with another couple that was 2nd time and they were disappointed too, later they offer us a cocktail by 11:30 really, we spoke with manager for dining ,he was arguing with us for almost 400 euros was bad, we wrote an email to the Hotel we never heard from them another poor way to manage a complain.

The location and design of the hotel are quite impressive. The views from the room, pool and restaurant are beautiful and relaxing. The rooms are spacious and clean, with large balconies overlooking the river. The breakfast at a good variety of bread, pastries, cereals, fruits and cheeses, as well as some hot plates. It serves Nespresso coffee, a plus for me!
Nonetheless, the common spaces (restaurants, toilets, corridors, etc.) were not thoroughly clean.
