“Great location and Villa”
Reviewed 1 June 2012 for a stay in May 2012

We are 5 mature adults who recently spent two weeks at Catherine Smith’s Villa Vouna in Kokkino Choria , Crete. There are several exceptional things about the villa and the location. The villa has exceptional views of the Souda Bay and surrounding area. Whether from the pool, the barbecue area or any of the three sitting areas you will have a great view of the area which is very scenic. There are multiple areas to sit and read either in the shade or in the sun. The front lower deck was where we ate breakfast and it did get some early morning sun to the side. It was never a problem and we enjoyed watching the ships (including a submarine) coming into the bay in the morning and the planes arriving and leaving from the airports. If the weather is a problem you may dine indoors. The living room area is open and there is quite a bit of space. The upper balcony is quite large and we mainly used it to watch the sun rise or the sunset. It is best in the morning and after 4:00 pm when the sun is lower. However, we had cool breezes most days to offset any heat. The best view is from there. There is also a shaded front porch at the entrance with a small table where you can sit and relax with a book. The views from the pool and barbecue area are great ,both in the daytime and at night. At night, the nearby city lights are pretty and the sky is usually very clear for viewing the stars. The pool is very nice (not heated) and we did swim a couple times but mostly just laid out in the sunshine (6 recliners and 3 umbrellas are there). We did not use the barbecue area as the girls did not want to cook but it is very convenient if you wish to grill out. The bedrooms are average sized and we had no problem storing our luggage and personal items. All the bedrooms have doors and windows that can be opened to let in fresh air and light. The queen bedroom has a bathroom inside and the other two have adjacent bathrooms with either a shower or bathtub. All three ladies were happy to have their own bathrooms to get ready. We had a few times when the power went off for a few minutes in the daytime but it returned quickly without us having to do anything. There are insects that can come into the house with the open windows and doors but there was nothing alarming. It is outside the city and we loved the isolation. Our water supply was fine until the last few days but we only had to call the manager and he refilled the tank in 15 minutes or less. You will have to buy drinking water, but that is true of most of the Greek islands. The water was fine for bathing, washing dishes and bathroom usage. There is a German WW II bunker behind the villa which you can reach by going up the st Georges Retreat road. It is very interesting to explore. We were very pleased with the villa and it suited all our needs. The second plus is the location of the villa. There are restaurants, markets, bakeries, beaches and shops within short driving distance. There is a small glass factory about 15 minutes from the villa that we visited on 4 separate days ( Beautiful glass works made from recycled glass at good prices). We were about 35 minutes from the cities of Chania and Rethymno. Both cities had very interesting old town areas where you could shop and explore narrow ancient streets. Chania has a beautiful waterfront, old market , lighthouse , a mosque and numerous good restaurants (the ones behind the harbor are the best _(the Iranian/Persian rice at Taman( formerly a Turkish Bath) is excellent). Rethymno has an incredible large Venetian Fortress, which is great to explore and many interesting shops. We were 10 minutes from the small towns of Plaka , Almerida and Kalyes. Plaka, the closest town , has a nice market that will meet your needs, right before you enter town from the villa. There is a small Italian restaurant next door. It also has free internet at Totems( they have great French fries and Hines ketchup)and several good restaurants (We liked Elypse (Greek and med. food) . Almerida has two beaches which are sandy and offer canoe/kayak/wind-surfing and sail boating. It is inhabited by a large number of British citizens who have relocated. It has several good restaurants of which we enjoyed Erotoritos (Greek) and Dune, where we got a traditional English roast dinner on Sunday afternoon for 9 euro. Kalyes is a larger town with several good sandy beaches, markets and good restaurants (check out Kozmoz-interesting site). You are also close to Vamos (Where we took a Greek cooking class) ,Aperta which has a Roman bath and Turkish fort, both of which are in good condition, and the Akrotiri Peninsula ( three monasteries(Triada is the most beautiful, two beaches, the British War cemetery(very moving), the Venizelos grave site (great view of Chania – eat there at Ostria (the food and view worth doing. ). If you want a longer trip(60-90 min.) you can elect to go to either Balos , Falasanara , Frangokastello or Elafonisi ( my wife and my favorite beach of all time) beaches. If you like hiking, the Samaria Gorge and Imbros Gorge are both close and worth doing (we did Imbros-shorter but very beautiful). If you like solitude you can take a boat at Chora Sfakion to Loutro-a small attractive village where the only access is by boat. You can also drive 30 minutes to Lake Koura and just relax. At every restaurant or taverna where we ate we were offered free Raki-a strong local spirit and either dessert or fresh fruit) We were treated very kindly by everyone and thoroughly enjoyed Crete. Great food , beautiful scenery and beaches , history going back 5000 years b.c., gracious people .In two weeks you will not come close to exhausting all this area offers. The villa location makes so many things possible.

Hi Marc,

Thank you so much for your great review;I'm glad you enjoyed most of the places we ourselves enjoy as a family. I know folk from 'across the pond' have exacting standards, so I'm glad the villa ticked all the boxes for you. I'm so looking forward to getting the pictures you've taken and if it's okay with you I'll use them to send to other guests as I'm a rubbish photographer! Please do visit Crete (And us) again, it was a pleasure to have you all.

Best Regards, Catherine

Thanks for taking the time to review the villa Donna; We hope you definitely will visit the place again....this time we'll try for better weather for you, however it doesn't seem to have dampened your fun! So glad you and the girls had a blast, and you are right...my pictures don't do the place justice so I may use a few you sent me if that's okay? Keep well.

Catherine

Aw, Thanks Anna; that is such a lovely thing to say! If guests only knew how happy it makes me to get texts, pictures (And great reviews!!)and to be told how much they enjoy the place.

I do hope you'll make it back again the whole way from Canada to villa Vouno...I am trying to organise wifi for next year by the way, I'll end up being a work widow though....I usually ban my hubby from bringing work with him!! Thanks for being fabulous guests.
