“A place to absorb moments of the past and feel so alive today...”
Reviewed 13 November 2016 for a stay in September 2016

The Cottages at Whitwell Station were a recommendation passed to me by a work colleague with the best intentions. You know how you can off load sometimes that you need a break but never really expect someone to ask what it is you want from a break? Well this was the exception to the rule.

During my fit of frustration with work, I had said something like:
"We need peace and tranquility. Somewhere to be uninterrupted. A place to completely switch off but with lots of opportunity for fresh air and walks - and away from people!".

My colleague, Tracey, has been visiting Whitwell for a few years now with her Mum & Dad and her Partner and dog(s) in tow. She absolutely raved about the place and all it has to offer.

The Whistle Stop and the Cottages have undergone extensive restoration and refurbishment giving you the perfect balance between celebrating and showcasing a bygone era, and allowing you to step in those footsteps today. Who'd have thought we would have ever slept in the 'Ladies' waiting room or Gentlemen's loo?

Nestled atop of the most peaceful and beautiful scenery, it's impossible to resist standing at the edge of the curb-stone and not picture the trains pulling up or racing through. You can almost hear the mighty burst of the steam whistle and feel that 'Brief Encounter' moment.

Additional touches such as station signs of the day and suitcases of the time whisk you off to your escape from today, wrapping you in warm, vintage yesteryears. And so your journey into the past begins... As did ours.

As for the Island. Well it far exceeded our expectations. As a keen photographer and both equally keen walkers, we were spoilt for choice with the endless countryside walks and historical references. You really do need to check out Osbourne House too. I'll leave that for a review of it's own.

Returning from a tiring walk is always a treat too. Kicking back on the covered platform with a good book and the obligatory English cuppa, all is good.

The perfect break with the perfect hosts. How perfect? Well we've booked again for next year.

“Wonderful family holiday”
Reviewed 23 October 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We have just returned from our 5th visit to Whitwell station this time was our first stay in Primrose cottage as usual the cottage was beautiful clean warm and welcoming - we were joined by our son daughter in law and six month old baby grandson - we were supplied with a cot and high chair for Alex which was lovely
The cottage is slightly bigger than Bluebell and comfortably fitted four adults a baby and springer spaniel we had great weather and really enjoyed our stay
Visited Amazon world , Heavenstreet railway, Osbourne house and lovely beaches I can fully recommend all the mentioned attractions great value for money and a must to visit - try the White House pub in the village a great pub with good food and quick service too

“Peaceful and homely with stunning views”
Reviewed 26 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We stayed in primrose cottage recently and enjoyed every moment. The cottage is very clean and tidy and felt like a real home from home. The views we had were stunning and we were reluctant to leave. It was so peaceful and quiet. Graham and Julia were very friendly and helpful hosts. There was everything there that you would expect and more. The old railway station has been restored to an excellent standard. We would definitely recommend this cottage and would like to return ourselves in the future.

“A unique and beautiful place”
Reviewed 11 June 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We have recently stayed at Primrose Cottage with our daughter son in law and their toddler.
The property is a sympathetically restored station with many original features. It is very well maintained, very clean. Graham and Julia are friendly and helpful. A beautiful peaceful place to relax with stunning scenery.

“Still Excellent”
Reviewed 7 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

This was our second visit to the old Whitwell Railway Station which has been converted into three excellent holiday cottages. Our first stay was at Whistle Stop, on this occasion we stayed at Bluebell Cottage.
Once again our cottage was excellent in all respects. Our hosts were extremely helpful and welcoming and credit to the holiday let business. The cottage is smaller than Whistle Stop, but none the less well equipped, tidy and most importantly spotlessly clean. This is a two bedroom cottage with one double bed and two single beds in a second room, both on the first floor. Not that you will need them in summer, but both rooms are equipped with wall mounted storage heaters should you care to visit in the winter months. Both rooms have ample storage for clothing etc plus there is extra storage on the landing.
On the ground floor is situated the bathroom/WC, kitchen diner and living room. Again all well maintained and equipped.
The premises are dog friendly (well trained dogs) but do not smell of dogs as some other premises we have visited have. Property comes with free WiFi (code provided in the welcome pack).
The surrounding grounds are excellent as are the views.
We would highly recommend these holiday cottages but would advise to book early as due to their popularity and all round standard they get booked up quickly.
PS the owners will provide you with a discount code for the ferries when you book which could save you a tiny sum, especially during the high season.
