“Never Again!”

This house looks like a magical dream house from the outside. However, as soon as we went inside, the horrors began. Scary bamboo stairs made us all feel insecure going up and down. We clung to railings to avoid falling and went very slowly each time. It was like scrambling up and down inside a jungle gym. Inside, the house smelled like mold from top to bottom, particularly in the beds and bedding. In fact, we booked four nights and only stayed one because the fungal stench was overpowering. The person managing the property tried to tell us this smell was normal. We were lucky we had brought our own pillows because there's no way we could have slept on the awful pillows provided. As it was, we slept on top of the beds to avoid the mold. We'd booked four rooms, one for each of us, but only three were provided so two of us ended up sleeping together. The following morning we left first thing, and a lovely lady in the village showed us to a different property on the beach where we stayed without any problems. When we contacted the owner to ask about refunds, she absolutely refused to refund our money. While it's pretty on the outside, the inside is the stuff of nightmares. I wouldn't recommended it to anyone.

Oh my-- where to start in this response? The person that left this review happens to be the best friend of another woman in town that we have had issues with-- small town life (!!). I suspect that much of her experience as described here was directly related to that "bias" but will address here regardless, as we don't want people to be misinformed.

1. The bamboo house has now and always has had 3 bedrooms total, each with a single bed, as advertised. We are currently in the process of converting a 4th room (now office) into another bedroom, but at the time of her stay there was no ambiguity whatsoever to the fact that the house had 3 bedrooms.
2. The bamboo staircases are one of the favorite "Jungle Book" features of many guests that have stayed with us. They are clearly depicted in the house photos online to avoid surprising any guests that may have mobility issues. We recently made the decision to change the entryway staircase to wooden steps in order to remedy these concerns.
3. One of the 3 women that stayed there apparently has very serious allergies to fungus. They stayed at the peak of the El Nino phenomenon, with torrential daily downpours. Because the house is entirely built from sustainable natural materials, it is possible that the thatch roof may have had a slightly moldy smell at that time. However, this is not the norm and would not have by any means been as intense as described here. We are meticulous in our cleaning, especially of linens etc, and would never subject guests to moldy anything.
4. When the guests left early, we refunded the remainder of their stay in accordance with our cancellation policy as described on Flipkey. The statement that we "absolutely refused to refund their money" is a bold-faced lie.

I am so sorry that our future guests will be forced to read this kind of exchange online! I understand that it is beyond unpleasant and apologize for wasting your time. Thanks for understanding!

“Fabulous house in cool town - watch out for partiers”

The house is as fabulous as it looks in the pictures. Beach is great, town is cool.
Manager was great. Amy was reasonable to deal with.

The only thing I feel compelled to say - because it sure would have been great if somebody had been able to warn us - is that every year at this time (Just after christmas) Mompiche gets inundated with travelling partiers that are excessive in their revelry. Rave music blaring until 3:30 in the morning doesn't really fall into the 'afro-ecuadorian' vibe as per the description. While the police presence helped shut down music the second night, it didn't shut down the roving groups of yelling, chanting and fighting youth. According to the town people I talked to this is an annual event, apparently fuelled by an influx of Argentinean and Chilean university students - If you are into that sort of thing then this is the town and time for you. But with two little girls - it was too much.

Great place, I just suggest you research the potential for the same sort of issue we had.

Regards, Cody

We are so sorry that you had this experience, Cody!! The truth is that January is now the busiest time of the year tourist-wise, and because our home is very centrally located right on the beach road with all of the best restaurants etc, I believe that you raise a valid point for families visiting during the month of January. Part of the problem was that we were not notified until the 2nd night, as we can indeed be proactive in resolving issues like this... I am sure it was frustrating for you. Also, I hope I am not overstepping boundaries by correcting you on this, but loud music and loud voices are very much in line with the Afro-ecuadorian culture! ;)
