We had to stay at this fort converted hotel while traveling from Manali to Delhi. We can taste some royal senses of Nalagarh. But rooms are not so exuberant. But people who like history can really enjoy the place. The restaurant has some rare photographs of the royal family. Staff are courteous.

On route Delhi- Dharamshala, we decided to stop at Nalagarh for a day. A short detour from the main town square to the top of a hillock, and maneuvering through some rather narrow winding roads, we got to the Nalagarh Fort.

At first glance, Nalagarh looks like any other dilapidated large fortress, but we walked in only to be charmed by it's beautiful expansive rooms, furniture and paintings from another era, and a massive terrace verandah offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city to the Shivalik hills.

We wanted to go on an extended weekend trip not too far from Delhi. This seemed a good option to start with.
The drive from Delhi to Pinjore (most of it on NH1) is pretty smooth. We started from Delhi around 5 am & after some traffic bottlenecks near the Delhi border, the drive was pretty much smooth (Karnal, Panchkula etc.). The last 30 kilometres just before Nalagarh "fort" were not very good. The last hundred metres is a steep climb to reach the main gates of the fort.

It is situated at the border between Punjab & Himachal Pradesh near the foothills of the Shivalik hills. So, there's lots of hills with greenery on 3 sides of the fort. The view of the village lights fron the terrace of the fort was pretty good. You can sit at the terrace, enjoy your drinks & snacks and the view. For photography enthusiasts, there are lots of nooks and corners to explore and to snap different views from the vantage points in the fort.

The food options at all three buffet meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were okay enough. We also used Nalagarh as a base to visit Parwanoo which is within a 40 km drive from this place. The Mughal gardens of Pinjore are another place that you can visit while returning from there.

Room Tip: The rooms near the tennis court are the cheapest. They are named Vayu, Jal, Akash etc.

Revisited Nalagarh fort on our way to Manali. Delhi-manali is a long drive, so it helps to break journey and Nalagarh has always been an ideal stop. This was my third visit, and I must say, the exterior of this heritage property did look run down. Perhaps because of the excessive rains this monsoon. The rooms are very tastefully decorated and each room is quite different, so friends..do ask to be shown around other available options before you check in. The staff normally obliges. It can make a huge difference to your holiday experience. We stayed in Raj Mahal and Naina something room, both suites. Really nice and spacious. They seem to have added some new rooms in the block where the Nalagarh Royal Family use to stay earlier. Worth checking out those. When we were staying, these were occupied, but looked nice from the outside. The place is very popular with corporates for conference. Food is satisfactory and caters to choice of majority of guests (normally buffets). The views from the fort are great and the whole ambience is geared towards chilling. So, do not rush. Ask for the tea coffe maker in your room if you want an early cup of tea.The place offers Kerala Massages from an affable couple. Somehow, the place really helps in unwinding after a long journey.

Room Tip: Each room is different, like in a typical Fort converted in to hotel. So do not go by pricing and no...
