I have just returned from a 7 night stay at Cretan Dream Royal and it was very nice. I had read a few reviews about people getting complimentary upgrades to rooms with a private pool but unfortunately that didn’t happen for us. We stayed in the older part of the building but it was still nice. The rooms were basic and the beds not hugely comfortable but very clean and it was a nice addition to have a kitchenette. The maid who changed our bed was very creative with her bed decorating skills and it made returning to the room more enjoyable.

The pool area is lovely, it would be nice if there could be more sunbeds with umbrellas. It seemed the only sunbeds that had umbrellas were those located in the naturally shaded area under the trees.

I think the cocktails in happy hour could do with being a little cheaper. Maybe more than 1.50 euros off would’ve encouraged us to have a few more. A nice touch that you get crisps and nuts with every order placed at the bar though.

I am a coeliac and I struggled a little bit whilst eating at the hotel. Breakfast was brilliant – a made to order omelette that tasted delicious. Dinner was more difficult and I received conflicting information about whether I was okay to eat the fries. When your dietary requirements are serious, it’s not very helpful when you eat the fries because your told they are okay, you’re then poorly because you suspect they might not have been, and then the next day you ask a different waiter and they say “no, they’re not gluten free”. That was day one so I unfortunately suffered the after effects of eating gluten for my entire stay. However, my family enjoyed their meals and said the food was nice. I had some gluten free bread one breakfast but it had mould on it so I just left it. I did see a lady bring her own gluten free rolls with her to breakfast – brilliant idea. If you’re gluten free, then I’d recommend just bringing your own.

In terms of location – I was a bit disappointed that it’s not that close to anything, not as close as it seems to imply on the website. You have to walk quite far to be near to any other bars or restaurants. The supermarket is close but not much else. We got a taxi into the town centre and it cost about 13euros so it wasn’t too bad but it would have been nice to have a little more around the hotel. If you are full board then I guess it wouldn’t matter but I like to go out of the hotel and explore when I’m away. My own fault as I should’ve done a little more research on location and not relied just on the website.

I wouldn’t use the tunnel to the beach unless you are good at holding your breath for 2minutes. It’s not very pretty and it didn’t smell very pretty either. Shame you have to pay for sunbeds on the beach that’s advertised as the hotel beach but it meant a nice escape from a busy hotel pool where people put towels down to reserve beds.

Overall, I think a lot of the reviews where maximum stars are awarded are written by people staying in the newer part of the hotel with private pools. I wouldn’t return but then that’s mainly due to me not liking to visit the same place more than once and not feeling overly comfortable that they can cater for my frustrating dietary requirements. If you stay here and you are a coeliac then make a trip to Chania Town and track down the Italian restaurant - Kariatis! 10/10.

Fresh and clean pool if you don't like the beach that's really close by. Also the staff are nice and helpful and the food is good. Cleaning is spotless!

The only cons are that the beds are very hard and AC went for €10/day.

All in all we had a pleasant stay here.

We spend a week here on our wedding trip and it was really wonderful. Beautiful hotel, very well kept. The food was great, the staff friendly, the pool area just perfect with an infinity pool and a wonderful view of the ocean (try the club sandwich and the strawberry colada). Great poolbar with cocktails and snacks. The beach is across the street, you can take a tunnel to get there. Buses to Chania from outside the hotel. Perfect if you want to relax and have good food. Not a party area. I hope to be back! The hotel is also called Cretan Dream Royal (not to be confused with Cretan Dream which is their budget option, this is a five-star hotel).

The atmosphere, the locations, the service. All top score. Fantastic food. We stayed at room 414. Very good room for family up to 4 persons. Only 1 ting that made the stay a little uncontrollable. The master bed is extremely hard. Please ask for an extra mattresses. We will return one day.
