“Fabulous historic site but a hard climb to get there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 September 2011

This is possibly the most spectacular historic site I have ever visited - the castle is perched at the very top of a steep ridge overlooking the beautiful valleys on either side.

The drive up the mountain to get to the entrance and ticket office is spectacular in itself and then you need to walk up steep rocky paths with many steps to get to the castle itself. The path was safe enough in the dry calm weather when we visited but would be very dangerous in the wet or wind.

Once you are up at the top the castle itself is quite ruined but the views across the valleys on either side make the whole trip very worthwhile.

“Fantastic place & a "must see" for anyone within 2-3 hours drive.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2011

Fantastic site & scenery made even more special by daily "Birds of Prey" talks/shows which are held at 11:30, 14:30 & 16:30. Be sure to wear decent footwear as the castle stones & paths have been polished smooth by the thousands of visitors.

“If you can only visit one castle, this is it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2011

Peyreptuse castle is everything I ever hoped to see in one. Its on a sheer mountaintop, and cunningly built right into it, so from a distance its difficult to see how large it is. And its stunningly beautiful against the sky. You need to drive up to it from Maury, past Queribus and Cucugnan, through Dulhic to a parking lot. The walk is only about fifteen minutes and not steep, although thousands of feet have rendered the rocks somewhat slippery in places so wear good shoes. Allow yourself at least an hour, ideally more, as there are regular falconry demonstrations worth watching. Take time to explore all the areas, and absorb the views of Queribus and beyond. We did not pause to see if there was food in the visitors center but the town below has several easy to find locations.

“The Cathars built this and were somehow defeated by the Pope..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2011

Went with friends and had read up on the history of the Cathars and their various castles to defend against the Pope's attacks caused by their particular view of Christianity. We would have liked to visit Queribus as well, but ran out of time as Peyreperteuse is on a very rocky mountaintop and takes time to explore..but it was well worth it. Wonderful views and history to absorb..The whole Cathar story is fascinating and to visit the area to see what they built on what anyone would think are totally unaccessable bits of rock...you have to go there to see for yourselves ...

“Don't Miss it!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2009

One of the most spectacular sites on earth - don't miss it if you're anywhere nearby. Several of the other Cathar castles are well worth a visit as well, but save Peyreperteuse for last.
