After reading the rave reviews, and seeing Modavie's stellar place in Montreal's lineup of restaurants, my friend and I went with high expectations. We ordered the "grilled sea bass", and were shocked when it arrived about 5 minutes after we placed the order. The entire ensemble tasted like it had been sitting out under warm lights, one in a line of preprepared dishes waiting for people to order them: the fish was tasteless and dry, the risotto it sat on also without taste, and wet.
Given the restaurant's reputation, as well as the price we were paying, we sent it back. The waiter was initially accommodating, but we waited almost an hour for our replacement, as if in retribution, while newcomers around us were served. And the waiter appeared visibly annoyed with us.
The replacement - the much vaunted lamb chops for me, and a lamb burger for my friend, were mediocre, the chops well seasoned, but thin and greasy, the burger merely okay.
This restaurant absolutely does not deserve its rating, at least not based on the experience of my friend and me. I've been to better "greasy spoons", at a third of the price. Perhaps, because the restaurant is in prime Old Montreal, and caters to tourists, rather than locals, it treats its food preparation as "throwaway".
At least on our night!
