Though others will disagree with my characterization, I found the Plateau area a more civilized version of the San Francisco Tenderloin district. Bars, restaurants and shops in 1 and 2 story older buildings stretching out for many blocks. Bohemian for sure. Some homeless/junkies here and there. It felt safe, but urged one to be cautious nonetheless. Some nice parks and a nightlife enclave that had perhaps seen better days around St. Laurent, as a number of restaurants were boarded up and gone. A funky enclave worth seeing. To find it, follow the giant homage to Leonard Cohen covering the entire side of a multistory old building.

Green, beautiful, and what Montreal was named for. Plus, close to the Mile End area with its great shops and restautants

Lots of cool, hipster farmer's markets and shops in the summer/fall. Where I would live if I were a Montrealer!

We recently spent a week at a 140 year old home in the Plateau, close to Square Saint-Louis. We absolutely loved this area of Montreal. The charming neighborhoods are beautiful and peaceful, yet still just a 10 minute walk from more bustling areas where we could pick up snacks from the European market (cheese, charcuterie, bread, etc.), ice cream cones from Diperie, or smoked meat sandwiches (and smoked meat poutine!) from Schwartz's. We also walked to Ezkapaz, an excellent escape room place on Boulevard St. Laurent, just past Schwartz's Deli.

Walking through the neighborhood, one can't help but admire the bold beautiful murals and the lovely architectural style of the various buildings. There are also some beautiful parks. The one near us had a lovely fountain, too. I could see spending 2-3 hours just strolling the area, browsing at various stores, and picking up food/snacks.

I loved feeling like we were part of the city life, yet still could retreat to a quiet charming place at night. I highly recommend staying in the Plateau.

Lovely paths and not too many people : a huge cross near the top and a couple of buildings to see. Something for the naturalist - birds galore and interesting rock formations. Great overview of Montreal from the chalet in which historians will enjoy the information. There's a small coffee shop and kiosk there too. Lots of people running up and down the main paths - but politely! Think the signage could be improved on the paths but otherwise a really good good way to use 2-3 hours productively and enjoyably
