Just happened upon Cadet while shopping for vintage clothing at Eva B (one of Montreal's BEST retail experiences, by the way) and second-hand iPhones at Lap Pro across the street (best value and service in the city). We had money in the parking meter, and didn't feel like walking in the rain down St-Laurent to La Capital (best cocktails and tacos in Montreal), so popped into this understated, sophisticated-looking place and sat down to a FANTASTIC meal at the bar. Had an amazing beet, beurasse, ground cherries and pecan appetizer, followed by chicken thighs, piri piri and peanuts, and gnuddi, sauerkraut, sausage and dijonnaise. My partner and I shared the works, including a couple of pints of artisanal beer. Taste bud heaven, attentive but not intrusive service, modest total bill - what's there not to like! Love this place - bravo!

This was a last minute reservation on a Friday evening....and it worked, thanks to the Maitre d'. The resto is located in the theatre district that has been cleaned up considerably. The decor is very modern and very tastefully done. The staff is professional and excellent. ....and the food.....DEVINE. Do not get me wrong the staff were friendly and warm in that professional way. I enjoyed their interaction with us and the way they helped us put together our mean and the wine selection.

Do go and treat yourself...it will be one of those moments you will remember from a culinary perspective.

In my exploration of restaurants in my own neighbourhood, a friend recommended Cadet on St. Laurent. It is a block from its parent restaurant, Bouillon Bilk. The latter is an extraordinary gastronomic experience, but is quite pricey, Cadet also features some very interesting dishes, but at a less extravagant price. The menu is divided into vegetable, fish and meat dishes. The waiter recommended that each person (we were three) choose two dishes and then share them. This worked perfectly. We all chose different things and there was exactly the right amount of food with interesting combinations. As one might expect, some dishes were more to our liking than others. The beef plate was themes expensive, and the most disappointing. It was a rib steak but into pieces, broiled and then prepared in a sauce that was overly sweet to our taste. They did oblige us by not putting a fired egg on top (Yuck!) On the other hand, the cod dish was extraordinarily good. All in all, we were pleased with the experience and will go again. The waiter was knowledgeable and pleasant. The wine list is not extensive, but has some good choices. The three of us had seven plates and three desserts; as well as one cocktail and a decent bottle of red wine. The total came to about $220 before tip. We considered it to be a very good value fo the quality of the food.

Elegant but unpretentious atmosphere with efficient and courteous staff. They offer beautiful and delicious dishes and change up the menu once in while with a nice selection of wines. One of my favorite restaurant.

We had tickets to a show nearby, and found Cadet through Trip Advisor. The reviews seemed good, so we booked a table to 5:30 for the 6 of us. Good thing too: despite this being a Wednesday night, it filled up quickly. By 6:30, every table was filled.

Cadet offers tapas with a twist, with most plates meant for sharing by 2-3 people. We started with broccoli with spaetzle and pistachios, fresh oysters, calamari and the octopus. Everything was delicious and the octopus was a standout for me. Others raved about the broccoli and the calamari.

Round two was the smoked pork with escargot and gnocci and the beef tartar, which were also excellent. I'm not a fan of tartar, so I took the word of the others, but the smoked pork dish was by far my favourite of the night. Absolutely delicious. We also got sea bass: tasty, but served whole and it was difficult to separate the fish from the tiny bones. If there was a trick to doing so, we didn't know it and the waitress different offer up any advice.

The price, before tip and not including the wine, was about $40 per person, which I found very reasonable.

If you have plans to see a show at Place des Arts, Club Soda, Metropolis or Theatre du Nouveau Monde, you should definitely try out Cadet.
