Annette Twining House
Reviewed 2 June 2017

We very much enjoyed our 4-night stay at this 200-year old home in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Hosts, Michael and Annette, are charming and helpful. It is ideally situated for guests to walk over to Queen Street and visit shops and restaurants. Sadly, this property is soon to change hands.

Room Tip: There is one very large suite with balcony on the second floor; however, it is more expensive.

Beautiful 200 year old house with 3/4 units - ours was a two room suite (living room and bedroom), very spacious. House decorated in antique and traditional furnishings. Breakfast was excellent - different each day - three delicious courses. Owners were friendly and helpful and very accommodating. Excellent location to downtown area - 2/3 blocks off the main street and close to all restaurants, theatres and shops.

Room Tip: Every room is excellent and quiet.

We needed a place to stay for one night in Niagara on the Lake since we could not get another night where we were booked due to the Shaw Festival being in town. We found the Annette Twining House through an aggregator website and we were so relieved and thankful to have found a very favorably reviewed place. The House is 202 years old and is lovingly maintained and furnished.

We arrived early and could not check in but our host, Annette, let us leave our bags and park our car. She recommended a nice place for lunch and gave us walking directions. We were happy that it was only a 2 block walk to Queen Street, the main street, and the recommended restaurant since it was a very hot day. After lunch we walked to the historical museum and then walked around the area, returning at 3:30. Our first floor room was ready and we were very pleased. We had a large sitting room with a fireplace, couch, easy chair and ottoman with a throw, desk and TV with 2 large windows facing the front and side of the house. There were original exposed wood plank floors covered with a large area rug. Through the sitting room was a very large bedroom with kingsized bed, large window, wardrobe, night stands with lamps, overhead light, and dresser. Through the bedroom was a large bathroom with a window, a single sink vanity, mirror, claw foot tub and shower stall. There was central air conditioning which was wonderful considering it was so hot. There was also a lovely garden in the back. Annette was very gracious and introduced us to their 2 house dogs who were very cute and friendly. She recommended drinks at the oldest golf club in North America which was 3 blocks down the road along Lake Ontario. She told us there was coffee, tea, and cold water in the room at the top of the stairs available whenever we wanted. Lastly, we were told that breakfast would be served in the dining room across the hall at 9AM prepared by her husband, Michael. When she heard we were headed to Niagara Falls for dinner and to see the falls illuminated, she gave us her casino parking pass so we could park near the falls.

We returned from dinner and the falls around 11:30pm, letting ourselves into the house using a key code for the front door. Other guests were also returning home from an evening festival show. There are 3 other guest rooms on the 2nd floor and Annette and Michael live in the back of the house.

We had a great night's sleep-the bed was very comfortable and the room quiet despite being on the first floor and across from the dining room. We sat down for breakfast at 9AM and met the other guests- 3 lovely ladies from Cleveland in town for the festival and a couple from Montreal on a mini-vacation. We also met Michael who prepared a delicious 3-course gourmet breakfast starting with a fresh fruit cup of locally grown fruits. The 2nd course was a vegetable omelette with sides of bacon and potatoes and freshly made bread with homemade sweet pepper jelly. The coffee was strong and plentiful and there was a selection of fruit juices. The third and final course was a warm fruit cobbler made with local fruits, especially peaches (which are the best we have ever tasted), a creme fraiche and phyllo dough. This was also wonderful. We spent almost 90 minutes sitting around the dining room table enjoying the company and food. We were very sorry that we were unable to spend the remainder of our days at the house as we enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately, we were past the cancellation date for our hotel for the next 2 nights, otherwise, we would have tried to stay on. This was one of the very few times that my husband was genuinely disappointed that we had to leave our accommodation.

We think that Niagara on the Lake is an underrated and little known gem and we intend to visit again soon. When we do, we plan to spend all of our nights at the Annette Twining House.

Room Tip: We thought the first floor suite was perfect. There is no elevator so carrying luggage or walking st...

My son and I stayed at the Twining House and it was an awesome visit. The owners are super friendly, brought us an umbrella at the restaurant that we were eating in as it started to rain while we were there. The house is gorgeous and decorated very nicely with antiques. The breakfast in the morning was out of this world great! I will definitely go back again and would advise any travelers looking for a little bit of history recreated and fantastic hosts with fabulous breakfasts!
