Beautiful church, went to Mass, choir was excellent, beautiful stained glass windows (originals blown out in the Great Explosion). Nice way to spend a Sunday morning.

Beautiful church in historic Halifax. Fairly recent construction (for Canada) but good to visit. Try to find a quiet time to enjoy and learn about the history of hte place.
Beautiful Neo-Gothic Cathedral, a national historic site. Built in 1820 and extensively renovated in the 1860's, this church has stood at the heart of Halifax for almost 200 years. The existing stained glass windows were installed in 1920, after the original windows were blown out by the Halifax Explosion. This Church boasts a Casavant pipe organ with almost 3,000 pipes, the first of it's kind to be installed in Atlantic Canada.
During the summer months, and free tour, with a personable and knowledgeable guide, is not to be missed. It includes a "behind the scenes" look at the sacristy and the small museum displays therein.
Walking distance from the piers, so cruise ship visitors will want to stop in!
..we enjoyed a brief stroll around the Basilica, and found it to be very serene, almost pristine, and with wonderful glass windows. I guess we’ve been spoilt with some of the Basilicas we’ve been to, such as Montreal’s, and it wasn’t up to that standard in terms of things to see or read about, but nonetheless an interesting visit.
We popped in to escape the heat and found ourselves in the middle of an about-to-begin wedding - embarrassing! Slipped into the side prayer area that was open to the public and being the good Catholic that I am, lit my candle and contemplated life for awhile. Once the wedding was over, we got to see the beautiful stained glass and marvel at the architecture. Great photo ops and staff were very kind. Wish we could have attended mass.
We felt most welcome during Sunday morning's Mass at the Basilica. It is a beautiful basilica and is in walking distance from the area hotels.
