I have never once in my life previously shown any real interest in Canada's immigration history or my own, and indeed, did not have Pier 21 on my itinerary of activities for a brief stop in Halifax. I have visited dozens of museums around the world and have always sought out natural over human history.
Pier 21's museum has changed that for me - alongside recommending it to anyone who is heading to our lovely east coast I'm also inspired to learn more about our history of welcoming all comers, and to seek out similar museums in future travels.
Every detail was done with care and excellence throughout - their travelling refugee exhibit was arguably the most poignant and thought provoking I've ever been in. Their permanent galleries were fascinating - particularly the use of quote from immigrants throughout. And, the room with actual archivists you can utilize to track down family migrants is one of the most brilliant ideas I've come across.
The only thing I didn't like was that I didn't have the time to stay longer!
