... is a very good way to describe the Halifax Citadel. Its commanding views of Downtown Halifax and the Harbour & its carefully restored fortifications and buildings & its very friendly and knowledgeable staff combine to connect the rich stories of this Canadian national historic site to the richness of modern day Haligonian life. Wander around, read the signage, speak to the people in their period costumes, and appreciate the historical significance of this amazing hilltop fortress.
Make sure you also spend time - for up to an hour if you want to study every detail - of the Canadian Army Museum housed in the Citadel's Cavalier Building on the west side of the Courtyard. They also offer several opportunities to immerse yourself in the daily lives of the former military occupants, so check those out before you & your family/friends visit and set aside the time to participate. My wife & I walked up the driveway from the south to access the Citadel, but there is public parking on the opposite side from the entrance and pay station. Any way you arrive, enjoy the scenery then learn the fascinating history.
